Student with Questions

Would like to know if I can pick your brain regarding the Fantasy Horse Race Game. I am fairly new, as you probably already know. I have been practice racing and currently have two male horses. Should I change the gender of one to female to improve the odds of winning and breeder prospects?
I also have been viewing the training video's and reading up on the game play. Have one horse entered into two races yet this week and another upcoming on the 13th, so far. Should I be doing something else that I have not begun yet? I have been trying the various track surfaces as well to date.
