Over the years, many types of administration for anabolic steroids have been practiced.
The two most common practices are cycling and stacking. Cycling is to take multiple doses of
steroids over a specific amount of time, then stop administering the steroid for a certain amount
of time, and then start administration again as needed. Stacking is using several different types
of steroids at one time to get maximum effectiveness. This can become a dangerous method if
done incorrectly.
The two most commonly used steroids in horses are Equipoise (Boldenone) and Winstrol
V (Stanozolol). Both of these anabolic steroids are used by humans as well, but are not
favorable because they do not gain strength and mass in a short amount of time. Instead, these
two steroids are known for increasing protein synthesis in the body’s cells, leading to slow and
even weight gain. Equipoise is not named for the prefix ‘equi,’ but for the meaning of the actual
word, meaning balance or equality in distribution. Winstrol V’s advertisement states that it is to
be used for recovery from trauma, surgery, over exertion, parasitism and disease. The product
also states that it promotes appetite, weight gain, stamina, hair coat, growth, tissue healing and
corrects nitrogen imbalance, while not creating unmanageable behavior, aggressive tendencies,
‘studdish’ activity, and impaired reproductive activity. According to an article by Dr. Barbara
Forney, a veterinarian practitioner and author, there is no research evidence that supports
anabolic steroids use as a ‘performance enhancing drug.’
Race Horse Physiology
Horses are known as ‘fight or flight’ animals, and more instinctively known to take flight
in stressful situations. Race horses use flight effects at the start of races caused by the starting
bell or being behind the starting car. When a horse takes flight they release the hormone
commonly known as adrenaline. Adrenaline increases the horse’s heartbeat and the spleen,

Anabolic Steroids in Horse Racing " Part 1 "
Human athletes have been in the spotlight of anabolic steroid use while in competition.
During the 1980s, it was speculated that East German gymnasts and swimmers were using
anabolic steroids. Then just recently, in the 2000s, Major League Baseball Players such as
Sammy Sosa, Jason Giambi and Barry Bonds have been questioned on their use of anabolic
steroids. Even in the sport of cycling, anabolic steroids have been an issue. This issue is now
bleeding over into the sport of horse racing, but does it apply? Can human athletes be compared
to equine athletes? If this is the case, then other issues such as beef cattle consumed by the
general public should be broached. This practice, along with giving sport horses anabolic
steroids is considered safe and is already regulated by federal agencies. Trying to compare
horses to humans on the issue of anabolic steroids, as Bryant Gumbel on the HBO Real Sports
episode ‘Faster Horses,’ is like comparing apples to oranges- it cannot be done accurately.
Anabolic Steroids
Anabolic and androgenic steroids are synthetic forms of the male hormone testosterone.
The Greek base of anabolic is ‘to build,’ and the Greek base of androgenic is ‘to masculinize.’
According to MayoClinic.com, anabolic steroids emphasize the anabolic effects of testosterone,
while minimizing the masculine androgenic effects. The hormone makes it easier for the body to
retain dietary protein, which helps the body naturally develop muscle. The use of steroids started
in the 1890s, but was not widely used because it was harvested from the testicles of living
animals. In 1935, synthetic testosterone was developed, and since over 100 types of anabolic
steroids have been developed for use.
