I'm an aspiring jockey who fell in love with horse racing when my dad asked me if I wanted to watch the Kentucky Derby with him in 2005. I picked a plucky little colt named Afleet Alex to win and though he didn't I fell in love with him. I frequently write about horse racing and have a blog dedicated to it. The plans for my future as a jockey include winning a Triple Crown race or Breeder's Cup race. My favorite quote is "Impossible? Things are happening every day."
Thanks! Good luck to you too! Sorry I didn't respond earlier, I didn't notice you'd left a comment, lol. I loved Afleet Alex! I got into racing in 2004 and picked him out as a 2 year old that summer (which was dumb luck cause I was pretty clueless back then, lol). What grade are you in, and are you considering attending the North American Racing Academy or do you want to go straight to the track?

Sorry I didn't respond sooner. School is taking over my life right now! How do I change it so I can accept PM's?

Thanks! I'm a freshman in high school and I plan to attend NARA because there isn't much horse racing in Minnesota. Just a small track called Canterbury Park where the largest event is one Breeder's Cup prep race and a large event called the Claiming Crown. Which is still fun to go to though.

Great! NARA is awesome! Everyone down there is super nice and you'll really learn a lot. I've visited there 2x and have just 1 more interview to pass before (fingers crossed) I get in. Sounds like you had a tough riding lesson the other day but that's great you're getting experience with tough horses like that. i just took my exracehorse to his first-ever show this weekend in Lexington and he was such a wild man (he thought he was gonna race again, lol) i ended up just using the show as a training session for him. Ended up riding him 3 times just today, and he got lunged for probly 2 hours or so besides that. but i'm not disappointed we didn't get to compete, I didn't want to rush him to do something he wasn't ready for. there's other shows down the road we can kick butt in, lol. Do you have horses of your own? What discipline do you ride?

Sound like a great experience for your guy at that show. How long has he been off the racetrack? I don't own my horse(We live in the suburbs and my parents don't want to board a horse somewhere. Plus I'll be graduating soon and I don't want to just get a horse then have to sell it when I go off to college.) I started riding Western but I've been riding strictly English for about three years now. I love it so much more than Western.

Romeo has been off the track for over 3 years now. he's 12. He was over raced (82 starts, 3 wins) and ended up getting track sour. He went to New Vocations where he was adopted by a lady who had him 2 years. She used him very sparingly as a trail horse. I got him in late November of 2007 so he's only been training as a hunter jumper for a little over a year now, that's why he's only just going to his first show. I also think English is more fun. Do you jump or do dressage? Well i would love to chat but I gotta go fold clothes (grr).

Well I bet he's happy to have his retirement after all those races. I am mainly just learning how to jump. Right now I'm about a foot off the ground or so. My mom was afraid of me jumping because it can be dangerous but I eventually convinced her and I started to learn last summer.

Yeah he seems to like his new job. He's also a quick learner and good about picking his feet up. He's 16.3 hands and naturally athletic so he's already jumping the same height jumps that our 2 Morgans are, and they've been training as hunter/jumpers since the summer of 2006 so he's got the potential to be a really nice horse. When I first got him he was underweight and had quarter cracks and horrible ground manners. When I went to look at him to buy him I didn't want him until I got on and rode him and I guess it was love at first ride, lol. He's had his issues but luckily he's turned out to be a diamond in the rough.
Jumping is so much fun! I really enjoy it, it's way better than flat work and dressage. I started out jumping on lesson horses and made it up to 2'6" until we got a trailer and started hauling our horses in to lessons. They were pretty green and had never jumped so we had to start all over again, back at groundpoles. But I really think training my own horses to jump has made me a better rider because with the lesson horses I was getting to do higher jumps but most of them were easier to ride and had a lot of mileage. Now Romeo and my sister's palomino Morgan Chance and my little Morgan mare Belle have started jumping 2' consistently and done their first oxers so we're getting back up there. My goal is to have Romeo jumping at least 2'6" if not 3' by the end of the year.
The funnest riding ever though, I have a good friend/mentor who used to be a jockey and she gave me most of her old riding stuff, including her jockey saddle. So I put that on Belle (not Romeo, as he is track sour) and practice in that. It's so much fun! Well sorry to write a novel. I'm bad about that.

Lol, that's okay. XD I hope you're able to get him to jumping 3' by the end of the year. Good luck!
