Dear Mr. Desormeaux,
I don't know where to begin! First of all, I want to thank you and Big Brown. Because it was that day, on the Kentucky Derby, when I watched you both race to victory, that I fell in love with horse racing. I don't know what it was: the excitement of the race, seeing the joy on your face as you crossed the finish line, maybe a little of everything. Now I watch every single race I can find on TV, and most of the time you're in them (which makes them even better)!
I think you're the greatest jockey in the world. I plan on becoming a jockey someday after I go to a college for jockeys in Louisville, Kentucky. I hope to meet you someday and get some of your much desired advice!
Hope to talk to you soon,
Kayla

Like Kayla, I'd never really been a "fan" of racing. Oh sure, I'd watch the Derby, Preakness, and Belmont every year, but I never really got into the passion of it all until a horse named Big Brown.
I've ridden horses for pleasure, and I love it. Even today, at age 40, if you ask me what I want to be when I grow up, I'd still say "A Jockey!" That dream kind of went out the window when I was almost 5'8" at age 14!
Anyway, the reason BB caught my attention was HIS attention to YOU. Yes, Brown seems a natural, like he could race with no one on his back. But you can see in the set of his ears and his focus how he listens to your instructions. I think it's admirable that up until the Haskell, I'd never seen you use the crop on BB - you'd never needed it! I remember at the Preakness, you had to run back for the crop in the jockey's room - and it turns out, you never even used it! He'd always responded the way you asked him to.
I just wanted to say "thank you" for introducing me to the beautiful sport of horse racing. I'm not in it for the betting. For me, it's all about the horses. There's nothing so beautiful in the world as horses being horses and running.
I hope you'll be aboard Big Brown in the Monmouth Stakes on the 13th - BB just wouldn't be the same without you!!! I wish you the best of luck, and I'll be in the stands yelling my lungs out for you and the big guy!!!
Good Luck!!
Maialou
