A full field of thirteen will compete in Saturdays Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds Race Course, and it is no wonder there is a full field since the purse is $1 million. The headliner is Mucho Macho Man who won his last race over this surface in the Risen Star - still, it was a solid but not overwhelming performance, but he is the deserving favorite. Machen finished fourth in that race, beaten by Mucho Macho Man by 4-1/2 lengths without a seemingly good excuse, so he will have to take a step forward or the favorite will have to have a bad trip for him to turn the tables. Elite Alex is graded stakes placed, having finished third in the G3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park. Left would be a surprise given that he hasnt broken an 80 Beyer, but he is an undefeated two for two and its hard to completely dismiss a horse that has never lost. Garret Gomez gets the call on Wilkinson who beat Pants on Fire by a head in the G3 LeComte here at Fairgrounds, but is coming in off a two month layoff. The field is rounded out by a slew of long-shots, including Populist Politics who drew the far outside, Le Mans, Majestic Harbor, Lion Drive, Mavericking, Nehro, and Nacho Business.
