Santa Anita Parks traditional season highlight, the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap, features a field of 11 runners, but all eyes will be on Twirling Candy who will be the big favorite, having won his last two races over this course, which are the G1 Malibu and the G2 Strub Stakes. He has only been defeated once in seven career starts. The top four finishers from the G2 San Antonio Handicap, Gladding, Spurrier, Aggie Engineer, and Quindici Man will try to knock off the big favorite. Soul Candy won the Cal Cup Classic back in October, and is looking to regain the winners circle. First Dude is coming from the east coast and was in the money frequently in last years most important three year old races, including a third place in the Blue Grass Stakes, Belmont, Haskell, and Travers, but has struggled to find the winners circle, having been there only once in thirteen tries. Tweebster finished a well beaten second to Twirling Candy in the Strub Stakes and it will take his absolute best to turn the tables on the favorite. Game on Dude finished fourth in the Belmont Stakes last year, and won his four year old debut in an allowance race, but he is still a little light on the speed figures in general. Pode Ir and Setsuko round out the field.
