St Trinians will return to racing on Saturday to try to win the 1-1/16 mile, $150,000 Santa Maria Stakes (Grade 2) a second straight year. This is the horse that gave Horse of the Year Zenyatta a scare last summer in the Vanity Handicap finishing just a half length behind her. This will be her first race since that race, but she has a trainer that can get them ready off long layoffs. Washington Bridge and Zardana, the first and third place finishers, respectively, in the Bayakoa Handicap (Grade 2), will face off again here, although it will take their best efforts to beat St. Trinians. An intriguing upset shot is posed by Mona de Momma who is a Grade 1 winner, taking the Humana Distaff in the slop most recently - she has never gone beyond seven furlongs so she will have the distance test today. It Tiz breaks from the far outside and won a non-grade stakes on the grass most recently but she seems to be a bit out of her league here. Vision in Gold steps up here off a nice allowance win, and Garret Gomez rides long shot Miss Match who looks outmatched here.
