This years $250,000 La Brea Stakes is led by Switch, trained by John Sadler, who most recently finished second in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint. Malibu Pier is an interesting mid-range price horse who just won an allowance race convincingly by 4 lengths. Always a Princess won the Indiana Oaks over a sloppy track, and will try to bounce back off a third place finish in the Grade 2 Chilukki Stakes at Churchill. Champagne d'Oro will be a formidable rival here having won the Grade 1 Test Stakes by 4-1/2 lengths, and prior to that won the Grade 1 Acorn Stakes at Belmont. She could only manage fourth in the Breeders Cup Filly and Mare Sprint finishing well behind Switch, but you cannot argue with her class; she could bounce back. Bonnie Blue Flag draws the outside and got within 4 lengths of Champagne D'oro in the Test stakes and might be a nice long-shot here. Pica Slew won the G3 Azalea at Calder two races back and draws the inside rail. La Nez is an interesting long-shot here having just won the state-bred Cal Cup Turf Sprint, but a minor award is more likely for her. Arte Viva, Shotgun Gulch, Hard Way Ten, Tornado Betty, Patriotic Viva, and It Tiz seem to be really outclassed here and need to step it up big time to pull of the win.
