Twirling Candy has raced four times, on synthetic surfaces and grass, going short and long, winning all four races, and all against fellow 3-year-olds. On Saturday, at the Oak Tree meeting at Hollywood Park, Twirling Candy, will face older runners for the first time in the Grade 1, $250,000 Goodwood Stakes. He will be facing accomplished, veteran runners as Awesome Gem, Crown of Thorns, and Richards Kid. Awesome Gem won the Hollywood Gold Cup this year in an upset, and Richards Kid took the Pacific Classic. Crown of Thorns has the best speed figures in the group overall, but has been earning them mostly at sprint distances. Can he carry that speed and extra couple furlongs in todays race? Dakota Phone finished a solid third behind Richards Kid in the Pacific Classic but might be up against it for the win, but he could finish in the money, and Croweded House was beaten less than a length by Richards Kid in the same race, so he could cause the upset. Informed seems to have gone off form this year and will be a longshot.
