The $800,000 Grade 3 Sunland Derby features a field of 9 three-year-old Kentucky Derby hopefuls, and most of the talent seems to be distributed among three horses, Conveyance, Tempted to Tapit, and Nacho Friend. Conveyance attempts to remain undefeated in four starts - he has taken the G3 San Rafael and G3 Southwest Stakes and will try to take them wire to wire. Tempted to Tapit will vie for favoritism having finished a good second in the Risen Star Stakes last month at the Fairgrounds. Nacho Friend is a chestnut who finished third in the Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct over the inner track and has a shot. Storming Saint lost the Borderland Derby by a neck last month and has the home track advantage, still his speed figures are a little light. Classical Slew needs to improve his speed numbers but he did finish third in the 7 furlong San Vicente at Santa Anita, though beaten 6 lengths. McKennas Justice, Endorsement, Fog Alert, and Guiltbyassociation round out the field.
