A field of 13 go postward in the Grade 2 $750,000 Louisiana Derby at Fair Grounds. Five horses entered are coming out of the Grade 2 Risen Star which was held at Fair Grounds last month, won by Discreetly Mine who took them wire to wire. There does not look to be a lot of speed in the race, so he has a chance to do the same again. Still he must contend with Drosselmeyer who finished 4th in that race but beaten only 1 3/4 lengths and was closing, and now gets an extra 1/16 of a mile to run down Discreetly Mine. Stay Put and Ron the Greek ran 5th and 6th in that race and need to find about 4 lengths to win this. Hotep finished way up the field in the Risen Star and is a longshot. A Little Warm holds the edge in speed figures here, but has never raced beyond 7 furlongs and the distance might be a little challenging for him. Nevertheless, he finished second in the G2 Hutchenson Stakes last month and could be right there in the mix at the finish. Fly Down is coming out of a Gulfstream Allowance race which he won narrowly and gets the class test today but his speed figure of 90 was nice. The Program is trainer Bob Bafferts primary hope but has only raced on the synthetic southern california surfaces so far, and is unknown on the natural dirt. He did finish third in the G3 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita in his last outing. Mission Impazible is coming off a 4th place finish in the Grade 3 Southwest at Oaklawn Park. Island Soul will take a huge step up in class, but has not finished out of the money in any of four career starts. Wow Wow Wow, Mister Marti Gras, and Backtrack round out the field.
