Among the ten starters for the $150,000 Sham Stakes at Santa Anita Saturday, there are no real standouts. The Program did finish a close 4th in the G1 Cash Call Futurity last December, but has since been barely getting by in N1X Allowance company. He raced in the same Allowance race as Kettle River who bested him that day, but Kettle River is coming off an almost 2 month layoff. Nextdoorneighbor won a maiden race in impressive fashion, winning by 4 lengths over Viva Macho who is also entered today. Alphies Bet finished second in the Cal Breeders Juvenile Championship to Caracortado, who won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes, so he at least has faced a strong horse before. Wolf Tail comes out of that race also, having finished about 3 lengths behind Alphies Bet, so he has his work cut out for him. Setsuko is 3-1 on the morning line despite having only won a maiden race, but he does get Rafael Bejarano, one of the leading jockeys in the nation. Garret Gomez pilots Outlaw Man but has been racing primarily on the turf with decent success. He is somwhat of an unknown quantity as it is uncertain how he will take to the synthetic. Straightomidnight, Viva Macho, El Mirage King complete the lineup.
