Baffert sends out the exciting Tiz Chrome as well as Macias in the Grade 2, $150,000 Robert B. Lewis Stakes Saturday at Santa Anita. Tiz Chrome might very well go favored in the Lewis based on his eye-catching local debut in the restricted Stuka Stakes going six furlongs at Hollywood Park on Dec. 19 though he has yet to go longer than 6 1/2 furlongs. The other exciting prospect and with whom he will vie for favortism is American Lion, whose sire, former Horse of the Year Tiznow is the same as Tiz Chrome. American Lion won the Grade 3 Hollywood Prevue Stakes in December and he too is stretching out for the first time and will try to vanquish his talented half brother. Domonation was beaten 4 lengths by Tiz Chrome two races back but still ran respectably at the finish and comes off of a third in the San Rafael Stakes. Caracortado is unbeaten in four starts, and he emerged victorious in his first stakes race on December 26 in the California Breeders Champion Stakes at 1-1/16 miles, the same distance as the Robert B. Lewis. Macias, Bafferts other runner, was fourth in the Prevue, but has won three of his other four starts and is 2 for 2 at Santa Anita. Dave in Dixie was a powerful debut winner at Del Mar, then headed straight into the Norfolk Stakes and ran a deceptively good race. He has not raced since then.
