A talented field of 12 go postward in Sundays $300,000 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park. The race looks wide open but favoritism will likely end up going to Battle of Hastings who won two Grade 2 stakes for 3-year-olds in Virginia during the summer, the Colonial Turf Cup and Virginia Derby and is ridden by Garret Gomez. Take the Points is coming off of two consecutive Grade 1 wins in the Secretariat Stakes and the Jamaica Handicap, and Straight Story finished a head behind that one in the Jamaica. The Usual Q T is a rapidly improving horse and has won four straight including the Grade 2 Oak Tree Derby. Other notable runners include Black Bear Island, who won the Group 2 Dante Stakes in England in May; Al Khali, who won the Saranac Stakes at Saratoga in September; Calder Derby winner Sal the Barber and La Jolla Handicap winner Meteore; and the stakes-placed runners Rescue Squad and Sir Al. Blazing Spirit will be a longshot.
