The 134th Preakness Stakes features one of the most compelling matchups in recent memory. Calvin Borel elects the filly Rachel Alexandra over his Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Rachel Alexandra will likely be the favorite coming off her huge effort in the Kentucky Oaks which was done almost effortlessly. Mine That Bird will be coming late again but if he has the same kind of closing kick should the track come up dry fast remains to be seen. Friesan Fire was the favorite in the Derby and will try to show that he deserved to be. Pioneerof the Nile, Musket Man, and Papa Clem all finished in a close three horse photo finish for second, third, and fourth place behind Mine That Bird and will try to distinguish themselves in the Preakness. General Quarters was highly fancied in the Derby but he steadied twice and may bounce back to the form that won him the G1 Blue Grass. Newcomer Big Drama comes in with a 108 Speed Figure in the Swale but stretches out from 7 furlongs to 9 1/2 furlongs. John Velasquez will likely send him from the rail - he is talented but taking the field wire to wire with Rachel Alexandra breathing down his neck will be tough. Todd Pletcher sends out Take the Points who might outrun his 30-1 ML odds. Luv Gov, Terrain, Flying Private, and Tone It Down will have to put forth career best efforts to hit the board.
