in the bag

the only horse that cn beat him is union rags but i doubt it the horse gets in trouble in a 7 horse feild also putting johnny v is a big mistake as well

soundofrum's picture

He's got what it takes to win

Personally, Even if Bodemeister was in the race, I'll Have Another would still have an excellant chance to win.Sure, it's a bit easier now, because Bodemeister was definetly a dangerous threat and the one to beat.
I understand that there's an 11 horse field for the Belmont. Source. The Daily Racing Form today 27 May 2012.

Ill have another is a "throw

Ill have another is a "throw back" ...old school horse& old school training...as long as he has a good trip, saves alotta ground, stays outve traffic hes got great shot at that elusive crown...Id like to see it! hey it could be last one for another 30+ yrs!

moneyman3's picture

He could do it

Ill Have Another is a very talented horse so with his talents and good training it should just be another race to him and then with Bodemeister out the only horse that can really give him a run for his money is Union Rags

richardmacias's picture

I agree with quietamerican

The race will be close. If IHA maintains a steady pace while not being to far behind the leaders going into the home stretch then he shoud be able to catch the leader before hitting the finish line.

Training method

Although I'm not a fan of, I'll Have Another's trainer, I have no qualms of how he's training up to the Belmont. Long slow gallops as opposed to the traditional works. Kind of using Charlie Whittingham's methods from the past for these marathion races. Because this trainer has a lot of foks who don't like him, I'm sure there will be complaints. But, not from me. This makes sense. I'd probably do the same. Yep, the long slow gallops. A stamina builder.

The biggest problem is making sure, the rider understands the configuration of Belmont Park. Especially around that far turn. Many make the mistake of moving at the midway point, with 1/2 mile left. You just can't do that and expect your horse to have anything left nearing the wire. If the jockey fully understands this and complies, I don't see, I'll Have Another losing. JMHO I'll have my money on him. Mostly exotic bets.

not likely

I know he is a good horse and all, but I dont think he can win this race. it is 1 1/2 miles long and no horse has ever won triple crown since Affirmed. I think it is impossible of winning the Triple crown, I think someone will rain on his parade by wining the belmont stakes.

I am not saying he is bad horse at all, but 1 1/2 miles might be out of his leauge if you ask me.

mstrchef13's picture

1 1/2 miles is out of everyone's league

How many races each year are contested at this distance on dirt in the United States? I know that there are some on turf (and some steeplechase races), and that some English races are run at that distance, but a mile and a half on the dirt is exceptionally rare so I don't think you can say that any horse is certain to be good on that distance.

My opinion is that I'll Have

My opinion is that I'll Have Another is a lock. He has proved himself time and again. All the naysayers should just be quiet and watch a GREAT horse run his race. It is so obvious that he is heads and shoulders above the rest of the three year old crop!!! I'll Have Another by six (at least) in the Belmont!! Just watch and enjoy!!!!

milliecat's picture

I'll Have Another

Jockey here is not even an issue. |He obviously knows this horse. (Very Well). He could blow the first two turns (my opinion) and still pull away in the stretch!!! The farther the better it seems for this horse. The Belmont (on paper) SHOULD ACTUALLY BE THE EASIEST of the three races for this pistol!!! Wins by at least six!!!

milliecat's picture

Triple Crown and Union Rags

As for people thinking Union Rags is a threat, I say WHY!!!!! This horse compared to I'll Have Another is a pretender. He has lost time and again in big races. By the way. what has he really won??? That's right. Nada!!!!

Even if he does win the Belmont, he'll never beat Secretariat xxx Love ya forever Big Red you'll always be in my <3. RIP you superstar. We'll Never forget you and what greatness you achieved xxx

That would only seem like a mild suprise to me if Dullahan does it. He's been freshened and was running hard at the end in the Derby.

Bodemeister Out?

I really don't know why people say that I'll Have Another has a chance to win now that Bodemeister is out. I mean, even if he was in the race, Bodey has proven himself to be a mid distance sprinter. He wouldn't be able to last the distance of the Belmont Stakes. Sure, he went a mile and quarter in blazing speed figures but he tired in th final stages and I'll Have Another came up from behind. He did the same in the Preakness. Plus Bodey is most likely very exhausted from this season of racing.

And, I'll Have Another just looks to be getting better as the distances spread out longer. I'll Have Another is my choice for the Belmont just like he was mine for the Kentucky Derby. Dullhan will give him a run for his money, though. Union Rags isn't on my radar. That lost at the Kentucky Derby took a real toll on him -- He wasn't on my bet then, he won't be on it now.

fabfarms13's picture

History is on my side. I

History is on my side. I would look elsewhere if I were betting on the race, which I'm not. Certainly not going to root against him. Winning this race is very difficult after winning the first two.

waxnm304's picture

I didn't even see him coming

I didn't even see him coming in the kentucky derby then i thought it was a fluke and its all a craps shoot from here got proven wrong. Definatly gotta put him on the ticket this time, you cannot cou nt this horse out.

YEAH BUDDY

I'LL HAVE ANOTHER WILL GO ALL THE WAY!!!! Me and my bffl's r gonna have a belmont party! We r all betting on I'll Have Another!!! :)

I'll Have Another

I think I'll Have Another is gonna be the Triple Crown champ this year he is ready if Bodeymeister were in the race i think I'll Have Another would still win!!!! he may not be big red but he is still an amazing horse!!!

dearnise's picture

Is this the year?

As it stands right now, there are only two horses that can beat him--Dullahan, & Union Rags. If any of the other horses steps up, and can take advantage of an exhausted I'll Have Another, then it'll likely be boxcar payouts across the board. The weather & track condition will also be a factor, too, but Belmont's sandy surface is kinda like the new Santa Anita surface. That being said, I say I'll Have Another has a very good chance of completing the triple crown.

I'll Have Another vs Bodemeister

Re-living Affirmed and Alydar. These two are much the best this year. Can't wait for the fall season and Breeders Cup races.

henryt1's picture

Triple Crown winner

Santa Anita Derby, Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, how can you not give I'll Have Another his just due.

cara7890's picture

In this kind of race, no horse is a lock to win

The best example is a race 60 some years ago that I cannot even remember the name of the winner of the first two legs of the triple crown. That horse went off at 1 to 5 and was already named the triple crown winner before he even ran the Belmont. Ironically, he lost to a horse with the appropriate name of Upset. Which proves that it ain't over till it's over.

1979 Belmont Stakes

I'll Have Another will win if Gutierrez carefully studies the 1979 Belmont Stakees. Gallent Bess was a 85-1 longshot and Ron Franklen was astride a famous favorite and in the backstretch Gallent Bess had torn off to a five length lead. Franklin took the challenge and the unecessary exertion took its toll. Spectacular Bid finished third to Costal.

The Belmont Winner

The winner of this year's Belmont Stakes, well it will be the first horse across the wire ( Who ever he is) can be classified as a super horse. My personal opinion I'll Have Another , will win. But everything is up in the air in racing, it only takes one bad step now a days. The only thing that I don't like about this horse is his air way, he reminds me of the Who's in Whoville.(from the Grinch who stole Christmas). Other than that he has the attitude and breeding and 4 triple crown winners in his bloodlines. That in itself gives him an advantage. This industry needs to stop the inbreeding and find an outcross with some good bone . Years ago in the 20's and when all the Calumet horses were winning triple crowns, the horses were expected to race in 2 to 4 heats at a mile in one day. Not many if any of our modern thoroughbreds can race and win more than 1 time a month . As soon as the powers that be realize this maybe our sport will improve( and just think a whole lot less breakdowns), and more real champions. {JUST MY OPINION}

The Distance is just too long

1 1/2 miles is brutal, just too long which is why it has beat down all the triple crown hopefuls for the last 34 years.

I believe this will happen to I'll Have Another.

These are only 3 year old's and they have been racing very hard the last few weeks. That takes a big toll on these young horses as they are expending a lot of energy and feeling all that wear and tear, thus making the Triple Crown so rare.

But "I'll Have Another" is a great horse, certainly the best of the current 3 year old's.

no triple crown again scraped!

The distance

2400m races are short.
Try 2 miles.
There are plenty of horses who can run a strong 2400meters without a problem.
Everybody thinks distances are too long, raise the distance and draw stayers.
