Now that it's time for the 2011 Belmont Stakes, which horse is the main contender?

Animal Kingdom is absolutely the horse to beat, especially now with the added distance. Look for him flying late.

Nehro is fresh and ready after skipping the Preakness. You'll find him in the winner's circle.

Mucho Macho Man has a running style that perfectly fits the mile-and-a-half distance of the Belmont Stakes. He's the winner.

Shackleford took a big step forward - look for this 3-year-old colt to continue to improve.

A different horse will win this year's Belmont Stakes. Because of the distance, expect a real long-shot winner.

Dialed In

The race sets up nicely for several, including Animal Kiongdom. I think, " Dialed In " will show who he really is and win from behind. I'm hoping to get good overlay odds on him, but don't see him as a real longshot. My gut feeling is that ,Shackleford will skip the Belmont. If he goes, I doubt if he'll get the 1 1/2 mile distance. I bet his connections are thinking the same thing. Although tempting, I'd look elsewhere.

Whoever Does Win

The field will have to be careful to avoid a speed-duel and not waste all their energy on the backstretch.

Difficulty of winning the Belmont Stakes

The Belmont Stakes has always been a difficult race for all the runners and at an early age, a horse is not strong enough to race 1 1/2 miles, the horse needs maturity and strength in order to run a long distance. Putting pressure on a young horse is not a good idea and that is why many horses get injured easily.

I think that

the horses you name will all have a shot except Mucho Macho Man. I threw him out of consideration for the Preakness because I thought that he was a tired horse. I know that he lost a shoe at the start, and I may be completely wrong, but I think that he has had a hard campaign already this year and needs (and deserves) a break.

Mucho Macho Man

I love this horse, my pick for the Derby/ Preakness, so glad he got Ramon Dominguez, I didn't like how he dropped all the way to last in the Preakness, I think this may be his race.

p.s. Just read that Uncle Mo was diagnosed with a liver disease, but is doing well, get well soon Mo!

Animal Kingdom or Master of Hounds

I think that this distance is perfect for Animal Kingdom and possibly Master of Hounds...I have this feeling that "MOH" may pull off an upset, and I LOVED his UAE Derby! I was also impressed by Animal Kingdom's Derby and Preakness runs, the distance should suit him, and if he is training like Motion says he is, he could run awesome!

The Field

I don't think any of the first 4 horses can make it the distance. Shackleford MAY have a shot after flying late in the Preakness, but TBs aren't build for stamina anymore, sadly.
