It's due to a combination of all of the above and other factors as well.

I disagree with the above options. Racing is failing for other reasons.

I think horse racing is
I think horse racing is failing because their has not really been a super horse since secretariat in 1973 . theirs been a couple of close ones like Zenyatta , but in my opinion , I think she was not enough to bring racing 's popularity up again . If there's a triple crown winner in 2011 , then racing will most likely become popular again .
I think horse racing should
I think horse racing should promote it's stars more. The horses should be seen more on t.v. (commercials for upcoming races) and talked up. A race of the week on ESPN, or NBC. An All-Star Jockey challenge (like a baseball all-star game) once a year (ESPN,NBC etc.), where the top 10 jocks of the prior year ride all the races on the card and are given points for 1-2-3 finishes. These things would put the spotlight on the HORSES, and the Riders. People would become more aware of who they are, and perhaps would be attracted more to the sport. Casino's have fattened purses in certain places, but will in the long run-I feel harm racing. Bigger and better (greed) has made it tough for the little guy to make a living as well. PROMOTE THE SPORT - and not the casino and all the million ways to place a wager.
Decline of Horse Racing
Ive been a fan and involed for over 40 years when I started going to the old Sportsmans park and Arlington Park on weekends in 1963 the place s were mobbed as long as the weather was nice it was crowded. On Big Race days it was packed solid ! There was No casino gambling ,, No state lotterys , It was basically the only game in town , of course no internet ,, not even off track betting parlor s
Guys would were a suit and tie on weekends and womem would get all dressed up It was alot nicer back then ,, most bettors were just there for fun , they didnt know much about handicapping ,, I cash many many nice 20 -25 -1 shots every weekend just by studying the form a couple hours night before. Plus most horses were owned by Big stables with lots a money to spend.
All thats gone now plus NASCAR has come on really strong the last 10 years that hasnt helped horse racing either. To be honest Id bet in 20 years horse racing will just be fond memory of better time s in America ,, I Pray Im wrong but thats what I see in the Future . Its a shame its such a beautiful sport and its good for the soul, to root your horse home to the finnish line.
its failing because...
its failing because of off track betting/sports books... the ratings on TV are way down due to lack of mainstream promotion combined with the fact that those that watch the races like the Derby are at the OTB betting it.. the people who used to watch it on TV and give it great ratings are all at off track facilities watching it there and betting on it there
Off track betting
Xanadu--I have to agree with you. There are more people going to these OTB's and betting on horses rather than going to the track to bet. Maybe they don't have a track by their house so going to the OTB is better for them.

actually--SEATTLE SLEW...
kept it going pretty big--along w/ the great rivalry of AFFIRMED-ALYDAR.. w/ the triple win--along w the contriversial-which it was-"near miss" of SPECTACULAR BID--however, the interest kept alive w/ his race against affirmed along with his underfeated season in 1980..it further got big when SPEND A BUCK looked like he'd take the racing world by storm at one point;when the announced his defection from the preakness--that sure didn't help--like was stated there have been close interests-- even w/ the oncoming of the SEABSCUIT movie in '03;that helped some--but i really believe there's quite a few more factors that have emerged since then.
I will say this new movie on THE SEC that's coming out--this wasvery good timing--never has racing needed this more than now i believe!!~
the DECLINE of racing
THE DECLINE OF RACING IS LIKE ANY OTHER SITUATION IN LIFE. THERE ARE MULTIPLE FACTORS INVOLVED.
FAN BASE IS THE MOST OBVIOUS AND THE PROVERBIAL "BLACK CLOUD" THAT HAS ALWAYS HOVERED OVERHEAD.
THE BUSINESS WAS ALWAYS SAID THAT IT WAS "FIXED".
PLENTY OF PEOPLE DIDN'T LIKE RACING BECAUSE OF THAT STATEMENT.
O.T.B.'S HAVE RUINED THE BUSINESS. IN THE OLD DAYS, PEOPLE HAD TO GO TO THE TRACK AND/OR BET OFF-TRACK WITH THEIR BOOKMAKER. WELL NOW YOU CAN STAY AT HOME AND PLACE A BET OVER THE PHONE OR THE COMPUTER. SO WHY GO TO THE TRACK WHEN YOU HAVE THE COMFORTS OF HOME WITHOUT THE SPENDING OF GAS AND TOLLS?? ( IF APPLICABLE)
NEXT THERE AREN'T ANY NEW FAN BASE GENERATED. THE OLD TIMERS THAT LOVED THE RACING BUSINESS ARE GETTING OLD OR DYING OFF AND THERE AREN'T ANY REPLACEMENT.
ALSO, A SAGGING ECONOMY ISN'T HELPING THE INDUSTRY. (FOLKS ARE WORRIED ABOUT KEEPING A JOB, MORTGAGE, CAR PAYMENTS AND COLLEGE TUITION ).
NOT PLAYING HORSES !!!!!
LOTTERIES ARE ANOTHER FACTOR AND CASINO'S. IT IS A CHEAP "QUICK FIX" FOR THEIR GAMBLING NEEDS.
( THERE AREN'T FOUR LEGS ENVOLVED WITH A HUMAN ELEMENT ENVOLVED )
LASTLY, THE HORSE RACING INDUSTRY DOESN'T PROMOTE ENOUGH, THE SPORT, NOR DO THEY OFFER ANY PROMOTIONS TO GET PEOPLE INTO THEIR DOORS.
( THIS IS A GENERAL RULE )
IN ATLANTIC CITY, YOU HAVE A PRETTY GIRL SERVING A DRINK WITH A HIGH SKIRT, WITH A SMILE.
PLUS AND A CAR IS OFFERED OFF, OR OTHER GIVE-A-WAYS...
WHAT DOES HARNESS RACING OR THRO-BRED RACING OFFER ???????
SO, HERE ARE THE MULTITUTE OF REASONS WHY THE BUSINESS IS DYING.
I HAVE BEEN AN OWNER AND TRAINER IN THE HARNESS SPORT. I SHUTTER WHEN I SEE HOW THE BUSINESS IS TODAY COMPARED TO 30 YEARS AGO WHEN THERE WERE 35 TO 40 THOUSAND FANS IN THE STANDS. I HAVE BEEN ACTIVE IN THIS BUSINESS FOR 40 YEARS.
SO SAD.....

failing racers
I dont know what its like in america with all the stupid laws around gambling, But hores racing is thriving in England.
if it is on its way out in america it will be a shame. horse racing in England is not just about going to gamble its a day out that all the family can enjoy with live music and things to keep everyone interested, the women love the dressing up part and the men love the beer. betting is just an add on that can make it more exciting. the kids also love it cos of the horses and the buzz that exist at the racers, some places also have bouncy castles and other kids things. maybe the american goverment should try not running there country like a controlled dictatorship and let people enjoy there lives.
Horse racing in America needs...
The number one thing horse racing needs in America is to be brought in to the homes. The every day person should be able to learn and participate in horse racing. The powers that be need to learn a lesson from Texas Hold 'em. Anyone who has a computer or tv can watch and/or participate in Texas Hold 'em tournaments. Because of this the masses become educated. The same has to happen with horse racing.
The racing powers that be need to bring the events to the internet. They need to have betting with fake money contests on the races across the nation. They need to offer real betting over the internet. Have a weekly show where the top bettors in horse racing face off against each other with serious prize money awarded to the winner.
Education is a must. Bring how to bet in to the home and the internet. What each bet is. How to read a racing form. The market needs to be flooded with educational information on how to bet on the ponies. Make the great bettors popular. Make their names familiar across the nation. This is all hard work and I understand there are laws that may prevent certain things from happening but work needs to begin on those laws and someday betting on the ponies could be as popular as the river card.
World wide Issue and Challenge
Successive govenance at all levels failing to grasp that the world was changing and that historic and established fabric was no longer applicable or sufficient. An absolute failure to understand that racing is and always will be a participation sport, and not a spectator sport. No participant is going to turn up week after week and get hammered, and beaten by high tax, high take out and facilities that do not reflect modern competitive needs and expectations.
A need to understand and cater for the new social fabric, to bookmark key dates and promote them to youth and cater exclusively to that bookmark. To introduce tuition on handicapping and make it available from experts for free or as part of the entry or entertainment package. Teaching that rewarding participation is to be found like everything alse in life in the learning. It just takes a paradigm shift in thinking from what was OK yesterday to what is necessary tomorrow and then cater to that.
Treat the sport and the people like participants, teach them well on how to participate profitably and they will participate. Where else can you spend a entertaining afternoon, be wined and dined whilst enjoying 6-8 floorshows and be able to participate in these with a newly found handicapping skill, perhaps even pay for the whole experience? With NBA, Nascar, Golf, No..Racing is truly unique in this respect but this small shift in thinking seems beyond most administrators to comprehend.
Look at the model being practiced by the Auckland Racing Club in NZ and see how they are developing a large new participation and growing attendance and turnover. They have completely revamped the " but this is how it has always been" mentality with "this is what the new partipants want so give it to them" mentality. This has meant completely revamping key carnivals, which fabric had remained unchanged for 100years, introducing new carnivals with those historic races in them. Cutting 10 race programmes to 6 races and running them at twilight. The howls of protest from the "out of touch" echoed around the community. But the new managment was committed and the change was relentless and ultimately has turned around the fortunes of a club erstwhile teetering on bankruptcy. Combine that with a political desire to nourish the huge employment, export, entertainment and social role and contribution that Horse Racing plays and the huge financial contribution it makes rather than to simply screw it of all life with exhorbetant tax. Government needs to understand and support the new methodology too, rather than treat the industry as a never ending cash cow. As in all business you have to fatten the cow before you start milking it. Racing is no different.
it is not as popular because....
of intertrack wagering, online betting...people do not have to go to the tracks anymore, and has become a technological downfall of the sport.....
