The tournaments that are running right now only consist of Community Mode races. All you have to do to compete in these tournaments is signup on the site (as you did) and the community mode races you run during the tournament are counted toward tournament entries.
We understand there is some confusion on this, but we have tried to make it very clear - I recommend subscribing to derbygirl's blog as she posts answers to most tournament questions on the blog.

also free races are given out periodically to VIP members. That is what you might be reading....all VIPs received a copy of Hollywood Gold CUP before the races and saw that the game nailed the exacta. As they say "past results are not indicative of future performance" :)....but if you want future VIP races I recommend going to the store and becoming a member.
Along with the races you also get 99,500 points to use at your discression and the ability to earn 5000 points a day by running races in community mode. Other cool stuff coming soon....
