I know that he didn't live that long or had many races but if the accident never happened Barbaro would've been a triple crown winner and the best horse of all time.
we wouldnt know really. i feel horse racing is one of the most unfair sport in the world. Why? Well because it can quickly take away a superstar as fast as they arrive. Barbaro is an example, who knows what he could have done. Its been years since there was a triple crown winner. I can also say the same here in the philippines. So being a great horse also would mean you must have luck and good health. Horses that are fortunate enough to mature and show their grit are those that can be really considered the good ones. Barbaro was good but he remains and would always be a question mark in the history of horse racing. I wish Barbaro was still alive. I love the horse. But again its part of the sport.
Such a tragic loss, the day barbaro broke down. I was wondering if anyone else besides me, thinks that the false start had some thing to do with his break down? Unfortunatley he will only be a question mark in racing history. However,In a perfect world, Barbaro would have been King!!!!!!!!
I still think Daisey Cutter would have destroyed any horse at anytime at anywhere....she just never could find her way out of the 3D world, now thats a tragedy...ruffiano
I dont understand this infatuation with Barbaro.
His speed figures never came close to SECRATARIATS ,SEATTLE SLEW,MAN OF WAR.,CITATION.
SEATTLE SLEW WOULD HAVE EATEN BARBARO ALIVE.
I guess because of the tragedy BARBARO'S legend grows and his true ability is clouded by the sympathy people have for him.
Actually rcknhrse Barbaro's ragozin sheets rating in the Kentucky Derby was better than Secretariat's and the 2nd best rating ever for a Kentucky Derby behind Big Brown's Derby who got the highest rating.
Anyways Seattle Slew is my greatest horse of all time.
And if I'm thinking right, Barbaro's winning margin in the Kentucky Derby was one of the largest since Assault in 1946.
There are so many great ones... Man o' War, Secretariat, Citation, Count Fleet may have joined their ranks if he weren't forced to retire early. Not to mention Kelso, Dr. Fager, Seattle Slew, etc. And the great mares: Ruffian, Personal Ensign, etc. I think it's impossible to really get a fair comparison between these horses because of how much the game has changed over the years. However, if I had to say just 1, it would be Man o' War.
Let us run with perseverance the race that is marked out for us.

Folks I was lucky enough to go see Secreariat a The 1973 Arlington Invitational, righ after he won the Triple Crown. Best race horse of all time? Come on, there is no question. He was the real thing, as he walked by going to the paddock you knew that you would never see such horseflesh. We took tons of photos and has always been my best and most unforgetable day at the races. By the way he destroyed he field. Secretariat gets my vote, Gus
Won the TC with amazing ease, running all three races in a different manner. Some of his track records still stand, 36 years later. Just missed a track record when running five-wide all the way around due to extreme slop at Arlington, and with ease, hardly drew a deep breath. Set 2 world records, one of which still stands and could very well stand for 100 years or more. (2:24 in the Belmont, sickest athletic performance I've ever seen, in ANY sport)
Ran extremely well on turf AND dirt, and mud, and soft turf w/fog. No way of knowing, of course, but I'd say he'd have flown on synthetic, too. Hell, he'd have probably run well on cobblestones...
This is a difficult question to answer. However, Big Brown nor Barbaro should not even be mentioned in my opinion. I will try to list the best I have seen and break them down as much as possible

a wild charizmatic stubborn ball of fire trainers said it was like wrestling a bear jockeys said it was like being shot out of a catapult and the world watched as man o war destroyed the competition.
Okay, Barbaro's times were nowhere near the greatest filly and mare AND greatest racehorse of all time: Ruffian! And Secretariat and Man O' War are the best colts. Honestly, Barbaro is a claimer compared to those three. He never did anything significant besides win the derby against a weak field. Then he broke down in the Preakness and everyone felt sooo sorry for him (i mean, i liked him a lot and felt bad, but...) and started calling him the greatest of all time when in reality his times and length margins were nowhere near a horse like Ruffian or Man O War's.
I would put Secretariat not as the greatest horse but a champion horse. I believe the reason for my case is competition. There really wasn't any, some people say Sham or Forego but not at that grade. Secretariat had his faults in the loss with Onion but I would put Secretariat in the top 5. He was a special horse at the right time.
I believe my opinion only Dr Fager was perhaps the greatest in the 60's and comparing the early 70's. Due to him winning the mile in record time which heald for years, and second the UN Handicap in AC. Never running on grass before with extra weight is really a special horse.
No opinion on Barbaro due to his loss. People assume but 1 1/2 is a long race we seen it a million times With Alysheba, and Smarty Jones, Cannonero II and the Northern Dancer and plenty other horses.
I don't think it's really fair to say that one certain horse was the best of all time. There have been some amazing horses throughout history. My favorite as of right now is Zenyatta. I can't help but root for that girl. She's got a lot of heart.

"At three, he won 13 of his 18 starts. At four, he won 10 of 14. At five, he came home first 14 times in 15 tries. At six, he won nine of his ten starts. At seven, he started 21 times and won 15. He also set the record at 7 at the old Futurity course at Sheepshead Bay of 1:08 for six furlongs. At the age of eight, he won 13 of his 20 races. At nine, 9 out of 25, but in most of these 25 races he took home money. In his last year of racing, when he was 10 years old, he won 4 of his 9 starts against much younger horses.
Not a gelding, still he raced way past the age when intact horses are retired to stud. Many experts believe a stallion sours if he’s raced too long, but as a sire, Kingston was as good as he was a race horse. Two years after he went to stud he was already a leading sire. He led the American sire list in 1900 and 1910. Kingston died in Kentucky on December 6, 1912."
If my math is correct he was only out of the money four times out of 138 races from age 3 to 10. That is SEVEN years of solid racing. Also what would $138,917.00 in earnings back in the late 1880's into the 1890's translate into todays earnings?
This horse is on 'Sires and Dams' Thread in the 'Trainer Game'
Post #20, page 1. Just about all the horses mentioned in this thread have their bio's on the 'Sires and Dams' thread if anyone wants to look them up.
Also check out "Carbine", Post #153 on page 4.
The bios reads in part, "Over half of the 65 Melbourne Cup winners from 1914 to 1978 were descendants of Carbine.[9] Statistics and contemporary assessments indicate that he was a dominant Antipodean racehorse of the 19th century, and he still ranks with such 20th-century Thoroughbreds as such as his descendants Nearco, Northern Dancer, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Ballymoss, Shergar, Arkle, Never Say Die, Mr. Prospector, Nasrullah, Nijinsky II (winner of the UK Triple Crown), Royal Palace, Fort Marcy, Better Loosen Up, Sir Ivor, Invasor, Phar Lap, Tulloch, Kingston Town[10] and Bernborough in terms of renown among turf historians."

Think's he's a darned stud, at 15.5 hands, thinks he's the biggest baddest horse in the herd.

I'd have to go with Ruffian and Secretariat. But Zenyatta in the fillies department impresses the heck outta me, and I LOVE her style!
Never was there more excitement at Suffolk Downs, Flyingdaaka's old stomping grounds, when super horse Broad Brush came into town. Flyingdaaka's favorite horse, local legend Waquoit, would take him on and shock everyone from local legend track announcer Jim Hannon to the Federico family that owned and trained him.
