Need Advice, But Don't Want to get a Mentor!

I really need advice on the Jockey Game in Quickstart!

I'm not sure how to choose a horse with a good chance of winning, so I often end up closing races before I run them, and opening the next race.
Sometimes, usually when I'm riding a stalker or a flexible/near pace horse, my horse will be running well, then the whole field comes streaming past and I don't know what to do! Do I push my horse to keep up, or do I let the field go?
I battle to judge pace, and I'm not sure when to push whichever horse I'm riding, or when to ease up a little.
I'm also not sure how to ride different horses' running styles properly; about the only horse I know how to ride properly is Here Comes Thunder; I know that she is a strong front-runner and I've always found that once she gets the lead, nothing gets past her.

I am getting wins, though I often struggle to get them, and I'd like to improve my game, and hopefully get more consistant results.

I don't want to get a mentor though, because I know that the mentor program won't work for me. I don't work well with other people, especially strangers, and having to have a fixed time to work with a mentor also won't work for me, because I share the computer with Mom, and I never know when Mom might need to use the computer.

Thanks in advance for any advice anyone can give me!

When jockeying for points...

..don't worry about the outcome before hand. Just run the races and get a feel for the horse you are riding and the other horses in the race. Over time you will also build up a history of "Past Performances" of the horses you ride and those that your race against. When you race you will be able to look at their past performances and see how those horses did in the past on the surfaces and distance(s) they ran along with the speed rating they ran for those particular races.

On another thread some players have put together lists of the best community horses to ride in "Quick Start" try looking for that thread in the search area on the upper right hand of the home page (try "Best community horses"). Go through the past threads and hopefully you will find what you are looking for, then copy and paste any list to a word document you can print out and use when you jocky for points. Good Luck.

Thanks for the advice!

I've seen the thread that you mentioned, and I've posted on it myself. As a non-VIP member, I don't think I have access to past performances, other than each horse's last two races. I don't really understand speed ratings either.

Apart from Here Comes Thunder, I find that I often get beaten even when I'm riding one of the good horses, and I'm not sure why.

In addition to the horses

In addition to the horses listed in the Best Horses, quickstart horses and community horses threads, when I first starting jockeying the the Points Per Start (PPS) tournaments, I would go to Featured VIP member, leading jockey lists and tournament winners information page that lists their best 5 jockey rides and made a list of horses and tracks found.
Get a feel for what makes the stamina bar go down faster and how much juice you need to save for the final stretch run
Non VIPs only get a limited number of runs on their Past Performance but VIP's get unlimited so my level of play went up after I became VIP.
I always click on the radio button that says race records and use that information in conjunction with the horse traits- that can sometimes be misleading, esp for slop.

Here Comes Thunder.....

will win if you do not lift a finger. You could fall off and she would still win. She is false confidence ( for a jockey) personified. But I still love her.

I love Here Comes Thunder

I love Here Comes Thunder too! She never lets me down. Other horses that I look out for in Quickstart are Aces Wild, Whispering Spirit, Lightening, Winning Birthday, Pouring Out, and Top Style, all of whom I've had good wins with recently.

I also ride Scorer, Bull Run, Silver Wind, Juliet, Timewalker, Empire, Wild Fire, That'/es Gold, Dancin With Dynomi, Flying Post, Jury Duty, and Havin Fun, although I haven't always had good results with them. I've actually only ridden Wild Fire twice in Quickstart, and he came second both times. I've also ridden Daisy Cutter a couple of times, but I haven't had much luck with her, unfortunately. I ride Zenith Horizon occasionally, too.

Jut pick the horse with the best odds or stats and try your best :3 Really bad advice from Sir Blue, but it works nearly every time for me. Also try and run the horse with their running style. (something else I don't do) I normally pick the horse with the best stats and odds then run them at the very back so they have nearly all their stamina left before sprinting to the end to overtake all the horses with no stamina left. Quite a good tactic for me, but sometimes that failes horribly so I would just ignore everything I just said. And in conclusion Sir Blue cannot give good advice and should probrably shut up now before he makes another new player fail at the game.

It's big and blue

I usually only ride my favourite top horses now, plus a few others that have given me good results; I spend most of my time opening races, looking at the field, closing the race without even running it, and opening the next race.

It's nice to have you here

First of all, I'm glad you joined the HRF community. It's an honor to have you here.
I know you feel that the mentor program won't work for you and I don't know why you feel that way, but there are thousands of people on here that can help you achieve your goal on this site. I'd be happy to help you learn about everything you need to know and don't worry, I work well with others especially people like you. If you need any help just private message me and I will get you up and running.
