Handicapping Race Time Question

I'm new to handicapping. Since the time splits posted are always for the winner. How do you figure the actual time for the horse you are looking at when reviewing pp. aside from the speed rating can you figure out the actual time by adding a certain time value for each length behind? am i reading something wrong in terms of split times? Is there are grid that summarizes what would be considered burning fast, fast, med, etc.. split times so when you are racing you can say in your head, this race is running fast or slow, etc...

thanks.

great questions ......for our horse racing game

First let me say hello. Time is very important in racing and so is running style. You can learn about both of these by clicking on the tab on the left called game and community info and look for the info releated to handicapping.
The other place to go is in the help file in horse race game itself. Please go to the the field of horses page click the help button and look for the section (Jockey Tips) Lot's of great stuff when riding in the race .THIS IS SOLID INFO PROVIDED BY OUR JOCKEY'S IN REAL LIFE

Time splits are always for the leader so figure 1/5 of 1 second for every horse length you are behind (if you are 10 behind then you are 2 seconds back)
The grid is a good idea and I will have one created for the game but keep this in mind . 1) Make sure you got your horses running style down first (that is more important then the times) You can see their style by either looking at the PP's lines or on the field of horses page there are hints to their style. if you run your horse with the wrong style he will not do as well ......
2)Start to track by 1/4 times first then as you get better look for splits in 1/8 of a mile . Simple rules first 1/4 for sprints(short races) should be 21-22 and change for longer races say 1 mile or longer first 1/4 should be around 23 and change to 24 and change . This will all depend on the size of the track (smaller tracks have slower times because the turns are tight. The track condition (a fast track is or should be faster then a heavy or slow track) and the quality of the horses . 3) For most horses each 1/4 will tend to be slower then the last except for real closers who may have their best 1/4 times later in the race .
Welcome and thanks for joining us

Excellent Feedback

Great information for me. i do recognize running styles and pay close attention to those. I'm Trying to digest how a race running slower or faster may impact that strategy. If im riding a closer and f the first 1/4 is a burner, do i need to still hang tight or pick up my pace a tad so i keep a bit closer. If im running a lead dog, and its a burner, do i hold back? or simply do i just keep a good eye on my energy and play it from there.

thanks again for the good info. looking forward to reading those sections and applying to the whole picture.

playing our horse racing game

Good questions . This will depend on the race horse and how we have his running style set. If the pace is hot and you are on a closer then why try to get closer to that hot pace . Let those races horses come back to you later in the race. The one think I have learned for sure (and you will to ) is to be as calm and cool as you can . Paitience is the key when being the jockey in real world horse racing and also in our horse racing game. Have you played the jockey video's ? They are loaded with solid info on how to ride.
Follow the PP's on the horses as well . They tend to tell you what style fits each race hose. Keep playing our racing game and you will be ready for the tournaments ....That's when it will all count .
Happy racing ....

Mike

Andrew Beyer

If you're looking for a good book for "real world" handicapping, Andrew Beyer's "Picking Winners" is pretty good. It gets kinda math intensive at times, but it's a good intro to speed figures and the like and also tells a lot of interesting stories.

Betting Thoroughbreds

Getting dated, but still with a lot of good, basic information is Betting Thoroughbreds (2nd ed.) by Steve Davidowitz. You can find the paperback version very cheaply using Amazon's marketplace. Davidowitz gives a terrific summary of the major handicapping theories in place, including a nice overview of the Beyer speed figures, pace handicapping, exotic wagering, and more. Well worth the money for a nice betting overview of our favorite sport.
