I bred a horse with a decent (not great) BSR. I was tired and rather than run him through a few training races I made the huge mistake of checking the performance report. I was told he was a route horse (middle distance, you know the drill). I dropped a small load of community points to place him in a Grade 2 tournament. I placed him at a mile for a few races. After the first race, and a last place finish, I ran him in a few training races and discovered he can't reach a distance past 6.5 furlongs with any speed and ran best at 5.5 furlongs. He proceeded to run dead last the next two races. Live and learn, fellow trainers, live and learn.

Below you will find the results of the Performance Report. Just so you know, we had a vet, a top trainer, a jockey as well as a very good handicapper all contribute in the assessments to help determine the quality of this horse. With that said, it`s possible that the report may not be 100% accurate.

Always best to train your new horse before you put them in a tournament of any kind. Those perf reports can be misleading.

Far more accurate than the Performance Report, which is purposefully misleading at times. Of course, some will tell you the DAT file is BS (it is hidden you know and you need to know the Abrah Kadabra or some such to find/open it).
I don't train my horses AT ALL any longer. NONE. Nada. Haven't done this for the latter half of my racing career (after finding the DAT file, which, of course, is just BS as some will tell you). I Just look at the DAT file and run where I think the numbers point to. And I still have MUCH success. Training doesn't translate into in-game performance usually anyway.

No hocus pocus.
No magic.
It's very easy to find with the vid provided in Ronwar's paper.

The dat file is a huge helpmate for trainers. But I still train my new horse even after I check the dat file. I have some horses where the dat file numbers look great, but when I train them they look lousy.
For example A horse to compete in a blue 129 tournament should have a SR at 6 F around 112-116. I have a horse now with a super dat file, so I go and train him and he only does 107's

I asked a buddy of mine on here how to get the Dat File info as it seems a large number of trainers are using them and not training there horses as the Dat File seems to tell you all you need to know about where to run your horses.I chose to continue training my horses instead and have never bothered with the Dat Files maybe it shows in my horses performances lately but i think using these files will only take the fun out of the game for me.What is the point of playing if there is no need to train your horses,it defeats the object of the game i think.I have no problem with trainers that use the Dat Files but not for me thanks.I think taking the skill out of the game would just spoil it for me.Not that i have any skill though but i try.

This is what a performance report should contain and nothing more in my opinion.
Horse Name Dat File 2yr old
Sire Hard Spun
Dam Winning Colors
BSR 126.7
The rest should have to be found in training the horse.Just an opinion.

I could have written that post myself. Almost all the fun is removed by using those files. I never do.
But, like you, I don't consider it cheating or wrong One bit for others to use them.
Do whatever makes it more fun.

I understand why people with 200 horse stables would use the DAT files. But personally I've never had more than 8 horses and I've always preferred to train. It just makes it more fun.

I think the Performance reports are basically the dat file in english translation. From what i see the dat numbers are fairly cosistent to what the Performance Reports says

Thanks for the responses. I've been playing long enough to get my feet wet. I'm in the money about 50% and I have the trainer gold badge but I'm still learning. I didn't know about the DAT files. I'll give it some consideration.

Yes, Stevic11...............But what you see in training should be transfered over into actual tournaments. JMHO

Okay guys, I can't find it... again. I've been trying for at least 1 hour to find the DAT file "trainerhorses". But I think I have to train my horses that's more fun! :) But pretty anyoing if your horse always runs into traffic at a 5f race!

Sometimes the dat files are hidden. Try searching for "HRF" and you should be able to find it.
I think the dat file is very useful for determining whether or not you have a true slop horse.
I still prefer to train my horses, but I like to check the dat report for distance and surface preferences. But the dat file does change from time to time. So you have to check it as your horse ages.

The Dat files are only good for weight breakpoint and peak range. Everything else you want to know about your horses will come from training, but others will tell you that you dont need to train them, just go by the dat file. Those are usually the ones that come into the forums complaining how their horses are not running good. Your eyes are going to do much better than the dat.

I will agree with everybody else here that the performance reports are not 100%. I have found that with some of my horses, they are somewhat true to a point. When I breed a horse now, I don't even look at the PRs but I go right to training them on different surfaces, tracks, and distances.
Maybe the reason why your horse failed at running a mile is because you didn't use lasix on him. Lasix helps a horse run his top speed longer without tiring. I also wouldn't have put him in a grade 2 tournament first time out. I would've started him in an ungraded tournament then worked him up to grade 3, and so on.

Yes the PRs are not always accurate. I've got one who runs well at 5.5 furlongs dirt fast even though the PR says it prefers middle distance. Just discovered one today which runs well on synthetic 10 furlongs. The report says it dislikes the surface.
