what do you gys think of the recent Derby preps especially the Blue Grass. I do not know how to judge Pyro's performance in terms of the horse's well being.
Big Brown seems to have had the most impressive derby prep race. he made blistering fractions and still won going away...
im not surprised that pyro didnt do much with that sluggish pace he tried to chase. so far it seems that the pace of the derby will be sizzling and i can see pyro flying late for the superfecta or better.
I agree that Big Brown is looking really strong. Pyro definitely struggled, but I think he's still a likely contender on May 4. Can't wait to see how it all plays out.
I've learned that NOTHING is certain in horseracing. Big Brown was very impressive in his final derby prep (Florida Derby), but so was Bellamy Road, who flopped in the 2005 Derby after winning the Wood by 17. But, he could be another Barbaro. I question Big Brown's lack of experience and his running style - the last solid frontrunner to win the Derby was War Emblem in 2002. Pyro has a running style suited to Churchill Downs, but his last race was a head scratcher. He should be at no higher than 8-1. Colonel John will be no worse than 9th.
Big Brown is my pick - narrowly. Pyro is a close second. Colonel John is third.
Well I don't honestly think you got Pyro's best in the Bluegrass. He didn't need the race, new surface, not a whole lot to gain. If he falters in the Bluegrass now you may be able to get 12-1 on him or in that range.
Thats my theory, just don't think we saw the best Pyro for a reason. I do also think that Monba is a very good horse and could be a very nice price in the Derby.
I'm picking Big Brown to take the Derby. Pyro impressed me at the beginning of the year, but has really disappointed in the time since. In my opinion, at least.
If Tomcito makes the field I just don't think he is good enough to reach the exotics at best maybe fourth in a super or something but he has not been impressive at all to me.
I wish Big Brown the best and it would be good for racing if he was a super horse BUT I don't plan to back him at the windows because it will be too low a price to buck his lack of experience. To me this could be a Giacomo type year with big payoffs.

i only say tomcito because he has one of the strongest closing kicks in the field just like giacomo. it doesnt seem like hes gonna be entered anyways.
i hardly ever back a favorite in the run for the roses but this years favorite is exceptional!
value doesnt win races. the best horse wins races.
