Whilst the video & game is totally addictive and awesome--so many variations & combinations--following horses improving through the grades is just seriously satisfying. However, what is excruciating is some horses in some races won't go to maximum effort. This is really painful when doing a charge from the back ( not talking about when the game automatically reduces your effort when you're a length in the lead--although i do take issue with this as i have lost the odd race as a result of this!).
Has anyone else come across this and is there a way to fix this?

Yeah it's really annoying when I have a big lead and I want to stretch it out and it won't let me. I did somehow manage to win the Derby with Ghostzapper by 15 lengths over Smarty Jones once...
lol@hoof arted.
That's not really what i was talking about--though i would agree since that reduces the ratings you get and doesn't truly reflect the form when u're checking that for a later race.
What i'm talking about is when sometimes with certain horses i'm in 2/3rd position with energy left and the effort starts to automatically fall off and you fall back & don't win!!
I think the reason is because they are tired? I've had it happen to me before and the horse was just quitting.
As for trying to win by more lengths...you don't see that in real life. If the jock has a 15 length lead he's going to gear down the horse and save him for his next start. There is no need to ride him when you don't have to.
Even though you may have energy left you may not have full speed left or the other horses are faster at that point in the race you are asking the race horse to go. There are a lot of reasons why having energy does not get you to pass other race horses or even sometimes look like you are falling behind. Race Horses have (moves) some 1 move some 2 and the real great horses 3 (very rare) . When a horse (moves) the amount of energy he is using can only be carried for a certain distence and then he will slow even though they still have some energy left. Some race horses can move a 1/8 of a mile some longer and some less.
Another point is if you have a front runner or a horse not in a spot that he is best suited to run the program will try to slow him down to conserve energy or get him back to the pace where he wants to go or should be going based on the race distence and speed of the race (pace wise) . If you want to over ride that as the jockey you need to keep urging the horse by hitting the arrow keys .

Mike,
Whilst your reply certainly has merits, it continues to happen in unrealistic circumstances. I have just had a 6.5 furlong race where i was unable to use maximum effort--the horse chiobebe was midfield, for half the race, gradually moved up , but was unable to get maximum effort when it was required. as a result it came second. It seems to stay at 3 pips off maximum.
Couldn't for some reason upload the race to the community either for some reason. Have no idea if one can see the effort gauges when races are uploaded here?
It's actually realistic in my opinion for some game horses to not want to run at their best effort. Some real horses like to run beside other horses or behind other horses and hold back to stay in company, others just have less heart or enthusiasm for running or are just lazy. Some might be afraid to run in close company. Some horses are the oppasite and have to be held back so they dont spend themselves too early, making it a very tiring race for the rider.
