This is one of the quirks of the game. Thankfully it doesn't happen all that often, but it has happened to me too. Others have said the same. I've actually seen dead heats on a few occasions, but the game doesn't have dead heats, so one will be the winner and one will be the second place horse. The more you play the more quirks you'll see. But, overall the game is pretty quirk free, considering everything.
My hat's off to the developers of this game and their great programmers. Would be nice to hear something from management about their work. Truely, unsung hero's, in my book.

I've seen the opposite happen as well; gives my result as 2nd at the end of the race but posts me as the winner in the official payoffs.

In the new version of our our online horse racing game this issue was addressed and fixed. Once you get the upgrade this will no longer be a factor. We needed it fixed for the tournaments (and their races) . The entire team is working today to help with the new horse racing game . We are pushing hard . We now have 12 testers and and they keep finding little issues (driving me nuts) but we are so close. Our development team is working all weekend to wrap this up (I hope)
Sounds like they are at the top of the stretch and heading for home......
