General questions

I have a couple general questions that I hope do not sound too stupid:

1. When using the "Race Set Up" to start a race, there is a box that can be checked called "Each horse at best peak age" Why would you NOT check this box?
2. Also at "Race Set Up" - what is the difference between "All races" and "Open races" (I should know this, but am having a mental block!)
3. When making "Horse Selections" - what are the pros and cons to checking the "No trait variablity" box? I always check it (except when I forget)!! :)

Lastly, this is not a question so much as a problem I have had since I acquired the game. I asked support, but they did not know -- all they said was that the new edition should fix it. I usually play my games while I am on-line. As soon as the horses cross the finish line, the game disappears from my screen and all I see is my desktop screen -- this lasts at least a minute and then the results screen appears. When I click "details" and then click on "photo", right after the stretch run and all the horses cross the wire, again the game screen disappears and my desktop screen appears -- again for at least a minute. Then the results screen reappears -- when I click on "continue," the race screen disappears again, but only briefly. Does anyone else have this problem?

Thanks for asking these questions. I was wondering about some of this stuff too. Especially the one about best peak age. Of course you'd want your horses running in peak form. I have that same mental block with all races and open races. I know an open race would include both sexes and I'm thinking all races would too, plus all ages. This is where I'm unsure.

about to head out but quick

about to head out but quick answers...

1. I dont click peak performance box quite often. I like to run horse at different ages and if you dont have the box selected each horse will mature at different paces and have different spead values. It adds a all new variable to racing. You should try it

2. I forget too...has to do with races and conditions to qualify for races. I think it has to do more with the old trainer game then just this basic play

3. trait variability allows for more fulcutations in skills...sometimes horse dont run to there peak levels....I always race with this off. racing is so umpredictable and I want to similate this too.

Same as dede said. Sometimes

Same as dede said. Sometimes I want to run a horse, say Citation, in a series of races as a two-year old. I can't do that if I check the "best age/peak" box.

Trait variability is one of the best aspects of this game. It adds a randomness factor in there so a horse might have an off day, then a great day next time out. Like in real life.

Thanks

I appreciate all of you taking the time to respond. It seems to me that there is another place where trait variability can be selected, but I can't remember where right now -- will have to do some searching.

BTW, none of you mentioned the screen blank outs that I experience -- have any of you (or anyone else, for that matter) experienced this?

oversight

Oh, I meant to, but forgot. Just wanted to say that I haven't had this bad experience yet. Hopefully, I never will. Strange. Wish I could help.

General Questions

Hi, Mangani -

Several good questions. Not checking the horse at peak age lets you evaluate your horse at various ages, which will show up when racing in tournaments. Having a wider variety to choose from prepares you for the tournaments.

Second question - all races vs. open races. All races are classified by gender. Open races allow participation by both genders.

Third question - it's always good to have some trait variability because when you run in a tournament, there will be trait variability on the horses. By checking the No Trait Variability box, you're getting the same horses to run within a very narrow range of performance. That will change when you play in tournaments. Having a wider trait variability makes the past performance information come into play, specifically on tournament races.

Your last support issue has something to do with your firewall. The game is trying to communicate with the server and is having a problem passing your firewall, which is blocking out the game. The new version will eliminate this problem and the data will no longer be passed through a more traditional path less prohibited by firewalls.

experimenting

I was experimenting tonight by going to control panel and changing my display settings. By doing so, I had sort of a similar experience as you, but more like a matter of seconds, rather than one minute, or so.

I like this setting, 1024 x 768 , but when you look at the past performances, it doesn't show info located on right side. Goes to speed rating and ends there.
My laptop has a different display setting so I'm able to see everything. There's another speed rating called, ASR. I take that to mean adjusted speed rating. I'm wondering how this plays into the game and how they make this adjustment.
