Just read this a few minutes ago on the Internet from Thoroughbred Times. Curlin's connections are satisfied with his works, and apparently Santa Anita's new synthetic surface said they will run him in the Breeder's Cup Classic. I'm happy that he'll be going.
I've stated many times, that I think he's the best thoroughbred race horse in the world, that's still racing.

He worked 5f in 59 seconds the other day, on the PolyTrack.
I wonder if Big Brown being out helped make the decision. Timing is very suspect
He's been out there for two weeks. I think they would have entered him in this even if the ghost of Secretariat showed up.
In fact, i have been thinking for a while that Jackson decided long ago he was going to run Curlin in this, and has been feeding the flames getting people to talk about it and speculate.
Also, I am pretty sure the Breeder's Cup people begged him to enter the horse. Losing BB was a huge blow to the Cup this year.
I think the pre-entries were due today too.
I don't think it was the main consideration, but in this sport all angles are taken into consideration. My gut feeling was that because he's handling Santa Anita's new synthetic surface and turning in fast workouts his connections would have made this same decision, even with, Big Brown in the race. I'm sorry that Big Brown won't be in the race due to his recent injury. But, that's racing.
I'm really sorry, too. This would have been the most exciting thing for the sport that we've had in YEARS.
Yeah, it would have been cool! But it wasn't to be, and there's a reason for everything.

It is a shame that Big Brown is retired, but Curlin's connections don't seem to be ducking any horse anywhere. As long as he liked the surface, he was going to run. It is good to see that he seems to have taken to the track out at Santa Anita quite well and I'm looking forward to seeing him defend his title.
Based on the entries, as of this moment:

What are your thoughts on this?
I must confess I know absolutely nothing about Duke of Marmalade and Raven's Pass.
Ya know, mrmojak, to be honest, I know barely nothing about the European invaders, although I've heard them speak highly of Duke Of Marmalade, Henry The Navigator and Raven's Pass.
From what I've heard recently, Henry The Navigator has never been tested at the Classic distance and in his most recent race, was defeated by Raven's Pass. Who's the better of the two??? I suppose it's a toss up.
Duke Of Marmalade could get the distance, but I'm wondering, what was his excuse, finishing sixth, to the great filly Zarkava (sp)
in the "Arc in France, a marathon race on the grass. I expected so much more of him that day. If he had a legitimate excuse and runs to true form, he could be dangerous in the Breeders Cup Classic.
I'm sticking with, Curlin and like the chances of Colonel John, a California favorite. I usually like the chances of European horses better, when they're running on the turf. But, it is said, many horse that make their mark on the grass, do well when switching to the synthetic surfaces. I think the "dark horse" here is, Raven's Pass. Should get good odds. This, in no way suggest that I don't ike the chances of the other two invaders mentioned.
From what I read, Duke of Marmalade was not that comfortable on the turf in the Arc -- not sure if it was too soft or too hard. As for Henry and RAvens Pass, both seem to be milers. I think Henry is committed to the Classic (surprised the heck out of me), but I think Ravens Pass will go in the mile -- assuming he is cross entered.
This surprises me too. If I was his trainer, I'd prefer a shorter race for Henry The Navigator. I think the distance will prove too far for him, not to mention the competition. I think Ravens Pass's trainer made the right decision for his horse to run him in the B.C. mile.
I've noticed where European's have done well at this distance in the past. Miesque comes to mind. What a victory.
