No, no it CAN'T be true! I'm almost crying right now!! Big Brown is to race no more after injurying his hoof in his morning workout.
Oh, poor Big Brown! It just isn't FAIR! I know things like this happen but...he's the one that got me interested in horse racing in the first place...and the one that inspired the dream in me, to become a jockey.
I realize there is already another blog about this but I just had to make my own, and make a tribute to him, my horse hero, myself.
I'm sorry Big Brown, that it had to end this way.
Yours,
Kayla

the last couple of years ive seen great horses that when theres pressure they crumble like bigbrown, barboro.they both get injured. And not able to race
Yeah, I suppose....

IT IS SAD TO HEAR THAT ABOUT BIG BROWN BUT THAT"S RACING.
RLPARLETT.
Yeah, I realize that.

I wouldn't say he folded under pressure. It's a minor injury that is not all that uncommon. This would keep a horse out a couple of months maybe. But the BC Classic was to be his last race anyway and now it just makes more sense to retire him since he can't run in that one.
Uh-huh, yup! I think you're totally right!
Kayla
he won his last 2 starts....ruffiano
That's true, way to look at the positive side, lol!
Kayla
they stopped him from racing so that nuthing bad would happen to him on the track...he has always had a bad foot...better now than too late..ruffiano
Yeah, and I also want to thank you. You helped me to realize that there's some good in every situation. And things happen for a reason.
Kayla
Nuthing more for him to prove, he was a great horse...everyone knows that, he went out a champ... ruffiano
Yeah, you're so right, he did! :) You made me feel a whole lot better!!

Kayla, I'm just as disappointed as you are. I'm as big of a horse racing fan as there is out there and this was what I thought would be the greatest race of my life, and that Big Brown would persevere as the best horse over Curlin. I'm deeply saddened will won't see him race again. Again my frustration continues as the sport I love can't keep it's brightest stars in action. All decade long we've seen horses rise to the top in the spring of their 3yo season, flourish during the triple crown, albeit while losing the Belmont usually, then retiring by summer. I give credit to Dutrow and Iavarone that they were trying to keep racing for the rest of the year.
But none to Curlin's people who kept him running in his fourth year.
When I reported my feelings about this incident on another thread, my only knowledge of the injury at the time was what I read on a Blood horse magazine report posted on the Internet. They made it sound severe. I think it was worded wrong when they said that part of the foot came off. I believe they meant part of the hoof came off. They had to have meant hoof. Obviously.
That's why I mentioned that the horse was plagued with foot problems. From what you're saying about the injury, the Blood Horse magazine had it wrong.
I'm a horse person and am very familiar with hoof problems. My competition (Gymkhana)and riding horse had navicular (sp) disease of his front hooves for a good part of his life. It was costly to treat and I retired him from further competition. To protect him, not because of the cost.
I've also been on horses, that while galloping, would sometimes strike their front legs with their rear horse shoes, causing minor injuries, with some bleeding. Often, but not always, this is caused by improper shoeing.
Yeah, it does seem to go that way. But at least they tried, no one could ask more of them. It would be crazy to race him in the BC with the injured leg.

I'm sorry. I didn't mean to put wrong information in. That's just what I read.

Oh, Kayla, I wasn't referring to you and I also posted what I had read. Often early media reports aren't always accurate. So we sometimes report inaccuracies. We mean well, however. I'm glad that the injury is such that he will recover with rest and wish him nothing but the best of luck as he enters into a new chapter in his life.
Rum, there is a picture of it hoof on DRF.com in their lead story. He tore a huge chunk of his hoof off.
It's disappointing that Big Brown doesn't get to have his day against older horses on the dirt (or in this case, synthetic) in the Breeders Cup, but at least he wasn't seriously injured. He tore his hoof which means he isn't going to be able to race in 2 weeks, but there are much worse things that could have happened to him. Big Brown will go to the breeding shed and enjoy his retirement running through his pasture everyday. And you still have his babies to look forward to! They'll be on the track in a few years! So it's not all bad. Appreciate the horse for what he did on the track and look forward to what he'll produce in the breeding shed. And find an awesome young 2 year old to love for the triple crown next year!
Ok, and yeah, I see what you mean!
Me too!
Kayla
Thanks for the info.! I'll go and take a look.
Kayla
I see that you are absolutley right! I can't wait to see his foals!
Thank you all, for helping me to see the positive side of it and to get my cheerful again! :)
