I'm so sorry to hear this sad news too. I hate to see him miss the Breeders Cup Classic. For the good of, Big Brown, I think it's best for the horse, to retire him now since his foot injury was quite severe. He's been plagued with foot problems his whole life.
After reading the full extent of this injury in a Blood Horse article on the Internet, it is highly doubtful that he'd ever race again.
About to turn 4, he wouldn't race again anyway. I wish him luck in the breeders shed.
Curlin is to workout between races today at Santa Anita and the owners are supposed to let us know if they will decide to race him in the Classic. With Big Brown out, I'm sure this will be on their minds. How could it not be.
Sad too to read today that the great filly, that just won the "arc" in France has also been retired. I think her name is Zarkara.
big brown used seriods like eight belle's and thats why he is getting injured .Curlin is older than him and has not been injured. And curlin is still faster.
steroids has nothing to do with this injury....I just had a horse do the same thing in a race too. Mistep and clipped the heal that is all...luckily my horse only had a small piece taken off and has 6 weeks before his next race.
That's quite unfortunate. I'm not a fan of the horse but even so I wouldn't wish injury on him. I was looking forward to seeing him run in the Breeder's Cup. The only good thing I can think of is that it does give Casino Drive a better shot at it. And at least the horse will survive. I'm going to miss him, but frankly I'm not looking forward to seeing his offspring race. The chances of him passing on his foot problems are pretty good, and with the breed being considerably less sound than it used to be, the addition of his genes into the gene pool really won't help things much. But either way, it's an unfortunate thing, Big Brown getting injured. Best of luck to him and his connections, and here's hoping that those trouble feet won't show up in his babies.
I agree with your post, dedewhale. Hope your horse gets better soon and does well at the track. Big Brown was a good horse. Too bad he was plagued with feet problems.
A very sad thing, it is. I think a lot of people in the racing world are really sad about it too, and probably disappointed. I know I am. But at least he's going to be ok, that's what really matters!
Yeah let's be clear on this: this has nothing to do with steroids at all. Absolutely nothing. A rear hoof cut a front leg in midstride. This happens all the time.
His feet problems that he has suffered from are totally unrelated to this.

I understand the injury was a foot injury. Goodbye to a great racehorse. I for one, will miss you.

I agree to that fact that his hoof problems had nothing to do with the steroids either.

Big Brown hasnt used steriods since April and that is not why he hurt himself, and Eight Belles was never on steriods in her life
