So, just for fun, let's assume that neither Big Brown nor Curlin are going into the Classic, and that Zenyatta stays in the Distaff. Where does that put the Classic? Besides those two, there aren't many standouts in that division. Personally, I think Casino Drive will give them a run for their money even if they both do go in - but he's such an unknown that I have no real confirmation of how he'll do. But what are your opinions? Not even on just the Classic, but for the other races as well. For refernece purposes, here's the current top 14 contenders(by Breeder's Cup points) in each division(if there was a tie for 14th i included them all):

I omitted the Juvenile turf races because there aren't many contendors in those races. But anyway, what are your opinions?
Comments
I'll try to handicap the other races later, if I find the time. I like, Colonel John. Of course, being from California, I suppose I'm somewhat biased. You have to like that 14 length victory by Zito's horse, Commentator. He'll be at a big advantage out in front.
I could easily see him winning. Casino Drive, if he enters and is at his best will be a tough one to beat. Tiago's starting to get back in top form.
Commentator is not going to the Classic, Well Armed is being pointed to
the Dirt Mile
Wow... i had not heard the news about Commentator. That makes me sad =(
I read where trainer Nick Zito and Commentator's owner are concerned about running him over Santa Anita's new synthetic surface.
Ironically, although for the most part, The California Horse Racing Board, has outlawed dirt tracks, Santa Anita claims it has dirt as part of the synthetic formula. Figure. The tracks that race 14 days or less are still able to use their existing dirt surfaces. That would be our summer Fair circuit.
I think it's sad that a good horse like Commentator is passing this prestigious race, because of these surfaces that are claimed to be safer, with very little data to backup such claims. They certainly aren't without their problems.
In fact, I read in the Thoroughbred Times recently, that a two year study, at several tracks, shows serious breakdowns, where the horse has to be put down, is almost the same. Two per 1000 races, as I recall. Dirt and/or synthetic.
It might have been two per 2000 races. I forget, but am not far off. Again, I think we need even more data than two years at only a handful of tracks. I'm not convinced that it's (synthetic) safer. At least not now. I need more proof.

wat happen to commentator????
Commentator is fine. Zito said he is taking to long to recover from his last two victories, and he's pointed towards racing next year
Without Commentator, the Classic may come up a little paceless. Hmmm...Big Brown, wire to wire, anyone?
Could be, could be......
Why are the european horses being excluded? How about Goldikova for the mile?
Aidan O' Brien's horses will also have to be respected as he is in flying form having notched up 21 group 1's this year! He will surely want to break the record accross the atlantic! With soldier of fortune in the turf and henrythenavigator and duke of marmalade in the classic, im sure he deserves to be considered!!?
You heard it here first!
Welcome from, Ireland, Shane............ I agree about Aidan O' Brien as being one of the best trainers in the world today. Any of his horses, that comes across the pond for these big races should always be considered. Not sure what you mean by being excluded.
You mention some really good horses. I'm real high on the chances of, Soldier Of Fortune. This does not mean that I don't consider the others as having a chance. I am concerned however, that Duke Of Marmalade didn't run as well as was expected in the prestigious, ' Arc, in France. Oh, Henry The Navigator will be a major threat in his race. That Raven horse too.
Sorry just meant excluded from some peoples shortlist. Ravens Pass is definitly improving all the time and will come out an even better horse with his next run. Its always good to see trainer John Godsen saving a special horse for a big run. The concerns for duke of marmalade and henry the navigator are similar. They've both had tough seasons and its still hard to know how they'll cope on the surface with such a high class field. Both of them really do need the turf as hard as a rock in europe so its anyones guess how they'll cope on the pro-ride!!? I'm lookin forward to finding out tho!
