Mentor program needs tweaking
just found out because my student gave me a bogus bad rating
I am not eligible for mentor over ride points. This student showed up for
4 days and gives me the bad rating JMO this is b/s. It should be reviewed
why the student gave the mentor a bad rating and if it is found to be bogus
then the mentor should receive the over ride points and believe me this is not about the points
its about the thanks for your time and effort

without the mentor program, there would be a lot of people wandering around aimlessly here. i know, because that was what i was doing. i've been playing the horses for 25yrs so i did'nt need a mentor. boy was i wrong. i'll always be greatful to my mentor for all the help and encouragement he gave me.
trust me, 99.9% of the players appreciate you and all the mentors for what you add to this game. don't worry about the few duds that come along. they'll wind up quitting anyway.

for allowing a student to show up for four days......why not terminate the student....i have had only one genuine student out of about four or five and all that dont show up get the axe no exceptions .....not saying i am a good mentor lol

Sometimes it's a machine error. I ignored the bad ratings I got from students who never showed up, until one day I got a bad rating from a student I really enjoyed, and was so surprised I PMd them to ask why, and what had they been expecting. They were astonished, and said they didn't give me a bad rating. Between emails to support from both of us, we got the error corrected, and the bad was changed to good, and we were both happy.
I wonder too whether bad ratings are ever auto generated if a student just doesn't rate their mentor at all; it's hard to believe that so many students that never show would go out of their way to rate their mentor "bad". I've had five students that never talked to me that gave me bad ratings. I don't understand the intent to harm, when there was nothing there for them to be angry about. Maybe a glitch? I'll probably never know.
The point is, ask your student why they rated you "bad". Ask in a way that demonstrates that you really want to know, not like you're angry and want to pick a fight, if you know what I mean. It's worth the chance that it can be repaired, and it will help support to know if there is a problem with unintended bad ratings.

It is the usual "system gaming" problem that is responsible. Users create multi-accounts and perform such tasks within the created account as "inviting a friend" and "becoming a student" for points. Of course, the one thing they can not resist is that free horse. Plus they can now negatively vote on such things as tournament creation and handicapping performance more than once. They also can't resist the lure of giving a mentor a bad vote. Imagine, they save a whole $2.50 with this, what they think is clever, system gaming. It is disturbing that this is allowed to continue.

like i said its not the points i dont care about them cause most of the time I buy my points or earn them in the trainer tournies Its just seems like a thankless job. cloud I know what ya mean about being a horseplayer for years i am going on 40 yrs. myself and i was surprised. Frost as far as being an error no it wasnt cause i did send an email and got no response and i know the person is still a member cause they just won a tournament.
There is no use to continue to lament on this cause it will never change. I just have to be very picky from now on

How do you get a student these days, apart from Fishing?
Am I using the wrong bait and lure? Or just fishing in the wrong sea?

I know what you mean i have had students that never show any interest in learning the game or responding to pms.I usually send the computer generated message then if no response terminate the programme.I think maybe 1 in 5 students go on to be trainers. But i can relate to what your saying it is so frustrating.Have a good day.

Ruffian .. I know what you mean also about bad students ... when I have a new player on game asking me to be their mentor .. before I do become their mentor , and accept them as my new student .. I set some ground rules and make them understand something right from the beginning .. Below is a copy of a message I send to them first !!!
Hi there ... My question is : Before I become your Mentor here on the game to help you out to learn the game .. I need to know If your gonna be serious about learning the game and wanna play the game regularly to learn about how to train your horse and entering trainer tournaments with your horse ... ALOT of my past students I had were new players who joined the game and asked me to be their Mentor so I can give them ( ALOT ) of my information In ( easy step by step Instructions ) I have on the game on how to do things in the game ... and once they joined for about a day (or) two on the game ... they ( ALWAYS ) seemed to NOT get back on the game for weeks to play it (or) even keep in touch with me as their Mentor to ask any questions about the game they don't understand ... then the Games Moderators on the game here end up having to send me a ( Reminder Notice ) to send to my students who are not being ACTIVE in the game and that they have 48 hours to respond Back to that ( Reminder Notice ) and If the students don't respond within the 48 hours .. Then I get another ( REMINDER NOTICE ) sent to me from the games Moderators telling me to ( TERMINATE ) that certain student ... NOW having to ( TERMINATE ) alot of my students because they are not keeping in touch with me Periodically during their Student Course Gets ( VERY ) Annoying !!! ... That's why I need to know If your gonna be a seriuos player of the game and want to learn it !! ( or ) If not ... It's a waste of my time and knowledge of the game becoming your Mentor !! ... Thanks K-n-b-stables !!!!

...the problem with "shadow students" is linked to the problem of multiple accounts. Since the multiple accounts are going away, we may get a lot less bogus mentor requests. That means we'll get less requests, but the requests we get may be more sincere.
Just a thought. Don't know, hope it's true.

And possibly for that reason I'll probaly never have one... I want them to come to me as demonstration that they really want to learn. After all, if they are not serious about it then it is a waste of everbodies time.
Also.. as far as the bad rating goes... I thought a student had to graduate before they could rate there mentor... Am I mistaken about that ?.. For me it was in the graduating process. Another thing I can't understand is if you teach someone anything that they didn't know before you taught them, then how can they be ungreatful ?? Doesn't speak very highly of their character does it ? I don't blame you at all for being a little upset.

Just a note from a new kid on the block. Without my mentor I would have been lost. I had easy questions, hard questions and I'm sure stupid questions. But to navigate this minefield when you begin it is imperative that you have help. As a mentor, you can only do what you can do and the student who really wants to learn will dive in and have fun. If someone doesn't really want to participate you can do nothing about it. I'm sure it is discouraging, but the avid learner really appreciates the help.

Nice to know there are a few real students out there. Best of luck to you; may your horses run faster than their reputations.
