I just started the game and purchased 2 horses.
1. AP Indy/Zenatta - 113, raced once and got a 90(sr) and finished 2nd.
2. Round Table/Dance Smartly - 118, not raced yet.

In practice races 1 beats 2 every time at every distance, but not by much. How should I set up practice races to really get a feel for how good they are?

Many give the same advice

Ive seen many longstanding trainers give the same advice on this.

Always train against grade one competition.

Use top community horses such as ... Heavy Fog, Cold Croc Ya and Here Comes Thunder as your water mark.

Run test races at every distance, season, track condition and surface.

Have fun.

Sam

Practice,experiment and practice.

John,
Whatever you do in practice doesn't necessarilly mean you'll do the same, or better in actual tournaments. If you have what you consider to be a pretty nice horse in practice at a certain distance, surface, etc. Try going to community female file # 3 and see how they do against monster horses like, Chicken. Lightning is a good one too from same file. I'm sure there's others. Those other horses mentioned by, Samiam are monsters too, but I'm not sure what file.

If you do good against this caliber of community horses, then feel confident that you might have a good one in your stable. More than likely, if you have a horse with a low birth rating, you're not going to beat horse such as, chicken. But down the road as your stable expands and you get better horses, always refer back to what others are telling you now.
By chance, I have a good 2 year old in my stabe now that can beat, Chicken. Doesn't mean I'm going to beat, Chicken in every race, but at least I know I have a good one with a chance. He just beat, Quality Road yesterday in a Grade 1 Stakes race.
Remember too, don't ever get discouraged and give up. You'll have good days. And you'll have bad days. Just as in real life horse racing.

Thanks for the advice all.

Thanks for the advice all. I am now running with Lovinit (male 1), Heavy Fog and Cold Croc Ya (female 1) and Chicken and Lightning (female 3) - Does how close you are mean much or is it just if you can win?

John

The most important thing to do in the beginning in regards to training your horse (s), is to find the best distance and the best surface and track condition, etc. There's so much to learn in this game and you're not going to learn overnight. We might even be asking too much of your horses to match strides with the likes of, Chicken. But, this is a start. Try lesser horses from the community files. Try everything in the books. Keep asking questions. experiment on your own. If they're sprinters and can't go farther than 8 furlongs in trianing, then don't go farther in tournaments. If they can't sprint, but love the longer distances, then go longer.
This is just generalizing. Nothings ever etched in stone. But, you have to start somewhere. Read the forum. Read all of Puddles posts. Subscribe to his blog and see all updates. I also recomend that all newbies read General's newspaper. It comes out every week or two. Read and comment. This paper is for all of us and keeps us informed of the good horses and trainers and their accomplishments in our game. The paper is there now. Please read and give the author (General) a pat on the back.

With those SR horses you

With those SR horses you need to race community male 5 horses.. these are all similar ability and sr..

if you race community 1 or 6 females your racing much better horses.

is the 113 exactly 113? if yes look for blue restricted under 113 event.. the 118 will need to race blue restricted under 126 infortunatly so to get a feel how it will go i would practice against females 1,3 or 6.

the 113 practice against males 5...and you will get best guide.

for slop race female 1,,,scrol down to the 0.4 ability horses and race heavy fog ect..
turf soft yeilding race female 1 girls..3.0 abilty
turf hard/firm female 1 again and add cold crock ya from females 3.

females 6 are good all surfaces, dirt synthetic and sand.

to go more defined.. try your 113 against quality 1.2 or less..

118 practice quality 2.2 and above.

Any further advice seek trianers with more knowledge and grab a good mentor..

best of luck.
Dave,.

I just finished 3rd, a head

I just finished 3rd, a head and a neck behind Heavy Fog and Lovinit, with Chicken, Lightning and Cold Croc Ya all behind me in a 5F sprint on Fast Dirt.

The thing is I don't really know if that means anything, as maybe those horses are not sprinters, or don't like the ground.

Whispering Spirit, Second Effort, Juliet, Chicken, Cleannancy, Rare N To Go also the good choice in testing your horses abilities..good luck

Welcome, Melvyn

In time, you'll amass quite a lot of racing data for all of the community file horses and other file horses that you buy. Since you're from England, may I recommend the two Europian files. I have them both. There are some great horses there. I'm sure you know most. Remember, Brigadear General (sp), Ribot, etc.???
My individual files have many races, at many distances and surfaces. So, it's easy for me at a glance to see what they could do. I've been running Chicken a lot lately while training for 5 and 6 furlongs on dirt and he' s racing brilliantly. He's won 28 of 33 races according to my personal files. This is at many different distances and surfaces, etc.
Everybody's files will look different. But not that different, because it is the same horse (using, Chicken as an example). Same horse model. Same for all horses. I've noticed that the really good ones handle most distances. Nothings etched in stone, however, so some might not agree. Again, welcome to our game/forum. Be sure to read Generals newspaper. It's a good way to learn about our horses and trainers. especiaaly the ones on top. LOL
