You need to look at your horses performance report first, and if positive you need to train to see if you can improve on that in advance mode. Try all different surfaces and conditions and distances to see where your horse performs best. Even once you know all this you may even be able to find a preference for a certain track. And if all else fails there is always the vet. GOOD LUCK.
There are also restricted races to enter.
And you can also try your luck at a claimer race. Someone might want to buy your horse and you can redeem some of your outlay.
You have a month to find all this info before your first stable fees are due so take time to find out it will cost you nothing.
I would consider joining the mentor programme. You get points for doing so and your mentor can help you evaluate the horse and help you decide what to do with it.
No steve, Flyingdaaka would disagree with your suggestion. Everyone has seen how some of these "good teaching mentors" perform in here. For the majority of them, there is not a lot to be desired. Most of these mentors will steer this willing new participant into evil directions, such as mega-breeding, attempting to manage out of control stables, endlessly searching for that out of reach super horse and other addictive behaviors.
Best to read in the get help section of HRF, try things out on your own, and learn. Of course, the gold standard for training methods is in Flyingdaaka's blog. A new trainer can not go wrong reading that, as it will help the new trainer enter the world of HRF in a positive direction.
M horse "so stunning " is exactly 96.5 ,,, read my thread 'breaking news" she just won her first tournament in style.... YES you can win..
good luck mate..
I am a good mentor have not spent a cent have a smaller stable than you and have a better training record than you.
Mentors are the best way to go for sure in this game.
Without them we would all be flying whatevers.
We just recently saw dave win a tournament with a lower ranked horse so it is possible.
It will take a lot of experimentation on your part-but it can be done.
Good luck and welcome to the game.;-)
The mentor program is a good idea, and also asking questions in the forum, you will get lots of help here also. A lot of questions can be answered in the help section, or have already been asked here in the forum.
No chance of improving the sr's aside from vetting it and that's not a sure thing.
Your horse will improve despite the fact that the sr's remain the same through aging and getting more tournament races under its belt.
Racodo thinks the worst thing a trainer could ever do is listen to Dakka. The only ones that listen to him is the animals trapped in his house. Can you Imagine how nutty they are by now. Slavedave, does your new horse speak to you in the third person?
I also disagree with Daaka. But To prove my point let the people who have been through the mentor programme speak.
My mentor was great and because of him I am now confident in the game. I am now a mentor myself with one very happy student who is showing us all how to bet
So if you been through the mentor programme speak up and do what we all love to do and prove Daaka wrong lol.
I think he isn't making a blanket statement at all.He also refers to "most of them".
I think what he's getting at is that there is some value figuring out things for yourself and not taking anything at face value.
I would agree.
As I also agree with Racodo and Steve that there is some value in following a mentorship program.
So I would suggest a little of both...if you want a mentor, shop around first and then get one suited for your needs.
But then don't be afraid to look for your own solutions.
All anyone has to do is take a simple look. Flyingdaaka just got finished viewing Racado's stable. Flyingdaaka needed a specialized technical support team to sort through all that data. Racado has 64 horses entered in 58 tournaments. LOL. Apparently that isn't enough because it was noticed that he had recently claimed several horses. LOL. This is how we want to confuse our new players ???
As for Sasteve, LMAO. He is in the beginning stages of his over-breeding / over-populating of his stable. He has been insisting for weeks now, that he wants his stable to be restricted to a managable amount of horses. Well, that goal still remains far out of reach. He is also in the midst of a claim frenzy. Are these types of reckless behavior what we want to showcase to our new players ???
Billyboy is correct. Some of these mentors want their students to become drones. They are not to think on their own, do as they say, following their advice to a "T". That is the worst way to get someone involved in the game, good point Billyboy. Nice to hear an occasional voice of reason in here every once in a blue moon.
"sassteve" is a fine mentor. I'm sure his mentor was adept at the game and sharing his knowledge. Sure, the help pages have just about all you need to know, but learning strategy and WHY other trainers do certain things to be successful is not.
The nuances of the trainer game are many and varied. I've been betting and riding in HRF for quite a while, but the trainer game seemed to be a bit daunting. I tried to play on my own with no success. My mentor pointed out my mistakes and misconceptions, and I'm learning to be a half-assed trainer rather than a full assed trainer.
Now, as far as stable size and how different trainers play the game, wouldn't that be the individual's choice ? I have no desire to have a large stable, but I want what I have to be competetive. If somebody has the time and whererwithal to have as many horses as they want, what's the big deal. I say more power to them. In the real racing world, there are small and large stables - shouldn't the fantasy game reflect that ?
I highly recommend the mentor program. What have you got to lose other than the 20,000 free points you get when completed. ?
If somebody has the time and whererwithal to have as many horses as they want, what's the big deal. I say more power to them.
I'd breed a trillion horses a day if I could, not to get ahead but just because I enjoy the breeding aspect of the game.
So why don't I argue with the daaka?
Because I believe he's only half serious in his comments, and just likes to add antagonism because he believes it adds to the fun...you know...wrestling style so to speak.lol
And he just may be right.
I mean...I love having bud buds around here it's fun as well but can you imagine a game where everything is a conceptual garden of eden?
Furthermore,I believe the value of a player like the flying D is that he's not tongue-tied.He will confront.
If you have something you believe in,and nobody challenges you, then you never have the chance to express it.
So I'm all for free expression as long as it is along the lines of respect, and that doesn't mean someone can't take a jab at you in a challenging way once in a while as long as it's not a personal thing.
So rock on everyone,I see a bit of truth in what everyone says.
Just my two cents.
The mentor program is not as it appears to you. I am a mentor, and I don't have any great horses myself, and I don't have my first blue trainer badge yet.
But the two students I had that talked to me the most and stayed in touch both have exceeded me in many ways, and particularly have won more than one tourney each. "Those who can't do, teach."
Players have been getting help on the blogs and topic sections of this game prior to,during and after the implementation of the Mentor program. Just because a mentor has a big stabel does not indicate that the mentor will steer the student to build a large stable. Every player on their own will decide what they want and what they are willing to invest in this form of entertainment. Of couse one does not even have to purchase a horse to enter Jockey & Bettor tournaments, or do both for free points and just to mention, the first horse is Free. There is also the Challenge Buddy for those that want to take their handicapping to another level. And then their is the experience of being a part of a world wide community, which is also free, fun and entertaining. The mentor program is Voluntary and no one can force another to participate, it has some benifits for those that choose to use it. lt's too bad that some "Put Down" others on this web site and it tends to be disrespectful which causes defensive and some time angry responses.
As for the the horse's SR it is just under the 50% point of horses in the game. It might have potential in low level and Restricted Tournaments. The SR cannot be improved in Advance Mode however you can find out how to get the best out of it by learning what Surfaces, Surface Conditions, Distance and Tracks it does best on and in. The initial SR noted in the Performance Report is a best estimate and can be several points higher or lower than indicated in the Performance Report. It is up to the trainer to find out exactly what the horse's capablilities are.
Can the SR be improved? There is always the Vet Visit, however before trying this, surf through the prior topics and find one that has the topic, "Vetting or Vet Visits" and you will get to see the numerous opinions from both sides of the fence on the subject.

Would you believe...and I'm being serious here...I've never had frog legs in my life?
I mean...I've never eaten the thing(or things)...I've heard some folk eat them with chocolate and the like but the thought of the slime in my mouth just makes me leap in fright.
I'm even thinkin' of turning vegetarian.
Yep,after tomorrow's meal I probably will.
Couple of paprika and garlic covered pork chops on the grill.
A lil barbecue sauce on top and Then I'll turn veggie for sure.
Yep.
Personally, I like the concept of mentors. I mean, helping others is to be commended. Sooo rewarding of an experience. And the students benefit. HRF business benefits. In fact, in the long run, we all benefit. IMO A win win situation.
As for myself, I read what I can. Never stop reading. Ask appropriate questions when need be and am always willing to learn from others and share my own personal experiences with others. If I make a mistake (oh yes, we all make mistakes) (LOL)), I will be the first one too admit mine and try to make the necessary corrections, that will keep my horses alive and competetive.
At this time, I'm doing my best to manage a small stable of 10 horses. And don't have the required time to offer my services as a mentor. I have a busy schedual away from the game too, as I'm sure most have.
But, ya know what. If someone asks for my help, I will "always" ( "so far this is true" ) be available and find time. Although I'm not a mentor per say, I actually am a mentor behind the scenes. I find helping others to be very rewarding and a way to meet new friends.
I also find that by taxing my brain to the limits, trying to give good, meaningful answers to good questions, it helps improve my own skills as a trainer and helps also to improve my skills as a mentor.
You need to test your horse on all racing surfaces and distances. Some horses can run 20- 40 pts higher in special conditions. If not I would suggest running him in a tournament and if he performs poorly staying with the restricted races. In general most horses need to have a SR of over 110 to win. You can be a competitor with less but tough to win against bigger stables.
The mentor program is very valuable. Don't listen to flyingdaaka - he knows only how to be a pest.
But if they're slimy I wouldn't be able to swallow.
I've a repulsion for that kind of thing.
That's why I cannot eat oysters and the like.
Also...about the term fishy chicken...would that mean it's like fish that tastes like chicken..or mostly chicken that tastes like fish.
Or are you saying the chicken itself was fishy..like you don't know what it stepped on so it's a suspicious animal and that's why the taste is so weird?
Cause after so many setbacks,I've now to be very careful of what I put in my mouth.
And regarding the fishy chicken. Try this, next time you go out for Chinese food; print up your own fortunes, take them along, and put them in the fortune cookies when no one is looking.
My favorite? "That wasn't chicken."
Bon appetit! It's a nice change from slow trainer game horses smothered in fantasy barbecue sauce.
Hey Matsimo, did you know your innocent thread would turn into a culinary magazine?
Wait.
Now that was fishy and it wasn't chicken.
Are you actually implying that my favorite chinese place is selling me something alien?
Somat that wasn't advertised as sold?
I doubt it though cause when I look at them, they look so innocent.
Harmless and even naive.Plus grandma said veggies were good for me.
Years ago, at a family gathering, someone made a chip dip that had canned rattlesnake as the key ingredient. I'm wondering if you could still buy canned rattlesnake, not that I care?
Anyway, some were eating it, but most weren't. My brother and I didn't want any part of it. Just the thought made us sick to our stomaches. The ones that were trying to get us to sample, thought we were being foolish and kept saying, " it tastes just like chicken" " You can't tell the difference"
To which my brother replied, " If that's so, why the hell don't you use chicken " ? It would be cheaper and everybody would eat it. Not just a few. Makes sense to me. If you want something that tastes like chicken, eat chicken.
I've found that when you ask any of these fine eaters what something tastes like, they always say chicken.
It's like the chicken taste has become the default taste of the otherwise inexplicable.
Or maybe they've just had chicken in many more ways than I have, and know of textures of taste which to me are alien.
Regardless, the thought of eating anything meat related is turning more and more undesirable as time passes and I come to love my horses like family.
Cause I read that in certain places they eat dogs and horses as well.
Just cause they're not like us and don't like horse racing.
You'll see the guy with a full plate of horse on his table and chickens abundant- happily running around and eatin' worms. And Those are really slimy.
Yuck.
I know what you are talking about. Just the thought makes me ill anymore. I tried rattlesnake, it was ok. And I have had frog legs several times. My family used to go frog gigging down in the desert in CA. I will never forget one time we we driving back to San Diego County, we always put the frogs into a gunny sack to bring them home. The little suckers really don't die right away. One of them got loose and jumped onto my uncle's neck.....LOL..... My uncle was driving and I thought he was going to kill us for sure.... ROTF.... Still funny to this day. To me frog has the consistancy of chicken, and tastes a little bit like it, but with a slight fish taste also, more towards chicken though. Same with rabbit.
Now, here is the worst. I was tricked into eating horse once. A friend's husband thought it would be funny to change the hamburger meat for horse meat. My friend and I both thought the meat wasn't quite right, when we cooked it, but the husband said it was just gamey smelling because the beef had been pasture fed instead of grain fed. Sounded logical, because my family has always hunted, so I was used to the gamey taste. After we each took a bite of it, and swallowed he started laughing, and said we ate horse. There was no way I was keeping it down, I had digestive pyrotechnics all over their table. So did my friend when I got rid of the horse meat from my stomach, so did she. That was the first and last time her husband did something like that. It was a long. lomg time before I could eat ANY kind of meat again. I still can't eat chicken, and very little pork or beef. Fish was the first thing I ate again after that.
And if you eat anything canned who knows what you're really puttin' down.
You're really trusting their word of whatever they say that's in there.
And God forbid you research these things.....
Life is too short to think about these things though..it may lead us to stop eating altogether.
