I have come across a few of those horses but the best thing to do is keep all your horses to specific distance, if you have a horse who goes distance better, keep that horse there and don't switch it to shorter distance because this will hurt your horse in the long run (in tournaments) so just run your horse in private mode and decide where that horse fits in.
I found most horses will lead you in wrong direction have you thinking that horse loves distance and on performace report will say " middle to longer distance" that don't mean your horse will love distance, you have to keep in mind the word "middle " is there so its telling you there's a very good chance that horse could go either way.
The best thing to do is run your horse against some of the horses who has good record running longer races and see how you do against them after each race watch your energy and give your horse different jocky instructions, also remember to run the horse in all 3 seasons.
Often, a good horse could do well at many different distances, from sprints to middle distances to the marathon distances. One must be aware of the fact that when you keep trying various distances, you're more than likely going to run into horses who excell at that distance. With that said, it might be best, as suggested by Sundown, to run your horse at his best distance.
There are horses for courses, horses for surfaces and track conditions and horses for a particular distance.
i found generally every horse at 2yo can run short distances but later in 3yo+ they begin to shine if they are genuine long distance or not!...smiles as already mentioned gud indication is track record you can compare in training. Final indication if your horse is consistent on and off the pace..at that distance..
