Hey everyone, hope ya'll are having a wonderful week so far. :)
Ok, where to start... Well, this is going to sound desperate but I need some ideas on ways to earn money. Horse racing, which although it's a lovely sport, is also an expensive one...at least when you're 14 and are trying to buy a jockey helmet. I didn't even pick out the most expensive one! lol But it's around $200 and although I do have the money, my parents aren't going to let me spend it all on that. So, got any ideas on ways to earn some money, I'd LOVE to hear them! I've thought of the obvious like a lemonade stand (it's winter folks) and shoveling snow...of course baybsitting...but what else??
Thanks,
-Kayla

*Sell something by putting it on E-Bay and let it go to the highest bidder??
*Put a 'For Sale' notice up at your local store or somewhere there's a lot of 'people traffic' and sell a few things you don't really want or need anymore??
*How about pet sitting or dog walking? Is it holiday time over your part of the world?
So there's a couple of ideas for ya Kayla !! :)
But just make sure you ask Mum and Dad first what you CAN sell, before you start selling half the furniture or the family car, OK!!! lol
Good Luck and let me know how you go! Cheers for now, Outbackjack. ;

Gosh, Kayla, I wish you lived here. We always find work for the grandkids around the house, inside and mostly outside in our vast back and front yards. I give them $10.00 to wash my car. Another ten if they want to wax it. We have three vehicals.
We give them money for applying oil to the wood cabinets, etc. Washing the dog, etc. Usually small jobs. But it works for them and it works for us. Sometimes, lite housework.
I know a girl that takes pictures of everyone's flowers ( in their gardens ) all year long, then sells them at local craft shows. Usually in the form of a card, or on note paper. I take and sell photography too. Variety, including race horses. Lost In The Fog, etc.
My wife does oil paintings and sells them at craft shows. She does eveything. All subjects. Our next show is on the 14th and 15th of November. Locally. We do well. Only a hobby for us. Not to earn money. But, the money is nice, however. LOL

From what I know of you, you have a special talent and that is writing (also your spelling is so much better than us HRF bloggers). You can achieve several goals by utilizing that skill, your enthusiasm and your own special way of putting a story together. You might try doing an interview for example either telephonic, Chat room or perferably in person. If in person you might want to get someone to video tape it, if the subject says it is ok to do so. You should pick a subject and person that would make for a great interview. An example would be lets say for instance, Chantel Sutherland, succesful female jockey, I think she was in the program "Jockeys". I believe that you two would make a great story and you could learn from a professional at the same time (even maybe become great friends!). You could then sell your story to a magazine or if you were able to record the interview to a TV show (OPRAH?!). You never know unless you try and knock on doors and/or make calls. I think you might even have Chantel on your Buddy list, I'm sure I saw her in the VIP lounge. If you don't have a way of contacting her (I doubt she is monitoring her PMs), maybe someone from HRF may be able to contact her for you and put you in contact with each other. Anything is possible if you try. Go for it, you got nothing to lose but so much to gain if it works!- )
My son met Laffit Pincay, Jr. at a book singing about a month or so ago at the Antelope Valley Fairgrounds, got his book singend as well as his DVD movie of "Laffit". It was a great thrill for my son who got to shake the hand of one of the greatest jockeys ever. Now you have the opportunity to open doors that will help you move closer to your own dreams. I wish you the best and hope this helps.

I also like soundofrum's idea of Photography. You could use this aspect to enhance your writing which the magazine's would appreciate, as they say, "A picture is worth a thousand words." You can also create a photo gallery over time of horses, jockeys, race tracks and fans and put on a display of your work.

Chantal is all about helping woman, well that's what she says on TV. Write her at Santa Anita (as I think she's there for the fall/winter meet) or ask Mary if maybe she can help get in touch with her.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for the awesome ideas! You've all given me things to think about.
richardmacias - I was thinking perhaps I could do something with writing, although what you suggested never crossed my mind...that would be cool though! I think I will try that...
I will let you guys know what I end up doing. Thanks again!!

Hi,try and find someone who is willing to sponser you, like a small buisness or grocery store.Or ask your parents for the cash and tell them you will do odd jobs around the house for a month or so to pay it back, just a few thaughts hope they help, good luck.

try doing odd jobs around the house, walk people's dogs, make bracelets, sell stuff on ebay, sell stuff you don't want or use anymore, etc. You mentioning buying a jockey helmet sounds like me lol, i go to jockeytack.com all the time and add up how much money I'll need. As of right now, I'm saving up for a helmet, safety vest, whips, pants, boots, a racing saddle, an exercise saddle, and undershirts
2 weeks 7 hours
stevic11 - Thank you for the ideas, perhaps I will try that! In another year I'll be 16 and will be able to get a job so that will help as well. But obviously I'll be getting a helmet before then, hopefully with-in the next couple months.
zenyattalover - Haha yes! Jockeytack.com is my main website, I'm on there all the time. And I've added up the cost of the things I want as well, too funny! I have a saddle, whip (although I'll need a new whip by the time I start racing), and a couple pairs of goggles. But currently jockey helemt is my main goal...I'm asking for a pair of jockey pants for Christmas and money for my birthday which is a little less than a month away, to put toward a helmet. After the helmet, I'll be saving up for a jockey vest. The list goes onnnn and onnnn. Hey, thank you for the ideas, much appreciated!

Maybe HRF and it's community should have a whip round (collection) and sponsor ourselves a jockey?
Puddles could add some sort of points donation system that he can transfer to cash for approved sponsors?
Maybe (I know, I'm dreaming... but then I'm a dreamer!) if there are any owners here they could think about giving out the odd ride?
Of course, someone would have to assess Kayla and other possibles to ensure they weren't complete no hopers!
HRF (or Horse Racing Simulation, LLC) could end up with it's own race showcasing it's sponsored jockeys! Ok, that would be some way off - but everything starts somewhere!
I get the feeling there are a number of people here who would love to help out if they can - so if you can come up with something that captures our imagination you could be closer to that helmet than you think.
2 weeks 7 hours
stevic11 - Thank you so much.
ronster - You have definitely caught my attention with your idea. Now that would be awesome...oh yes, they'd have to evaluate us to see if they think we are worth it, but I don't think they'd be disappointed. I will be 15 in less than a month and am still learning, but the sources I am learning from are some of the best, most knowledgable people in horse racing I know of. What do you mean though, come up with something that captures your imagination? I am a bit lost on that part...I am sure I could come up with something, but I guess I need you to explain that a little more?
Thank you!

but if your that young.... why get the helmet now when you don't need it really..... by the time you race it will be old... I would pay now what you are able to do.. then wait till you are old enough to work then save up for said helmet?.. I know your excited and all.. and I am excited for you... :D just a suggestion.. :D

I'm not that familiar with the workings of horse racing (my father was a bookmaker and I did a bit of gambling - none of which really helps here!) or what drives HRF and the community but in general terms if I was trying to get sponsorship I would be looking for ways to appeal to potential sponsors in a material way.
People rarely part with money for nothing - but sometimes it doesn't take very much to pry a little out of their hands.
A common approach would be to hand out event tickets to sponsors (dunno if that applies here?) or offer your spare time to sponsors. Displaying the sponsor/company name/logo everywhere you go is a given.
I'm really not the person to talk to about ideas - I don't have a creative bone in my body - but when I was younger I had some skill at the game of Pool and I got my local Publican to give me free games and cover my tourney entry fees in exchange for having regular 'Beat the Ronster' nights in his pub - this helped drum up some business and gave his bar name some exposure at the tourneys I went to... and it meant I had somewhere to practice all day long for free.
Some friends of mine who were trying to get into motor racing would help out sponsors by driving, cleaning, doing mechanics and taking them for high speed runs in the sponsored race vehicle on a track day (the sponsors would sometimes use that day to entertain their clients) as well as giving them complimentary tickets to the race events.
You just have to find something that people want and that you can do... and it would obviously help your development if the thing you offer to do was related to horse racing in some way.... but then that's why you started this thread - to find ideas - so I've not really helped have I!
Sorry, I just don't know enough about the subject. You could start by identifying what you can offer someone?
You could also approach Puddles - I get the feeling he is an ideas man... see what (if anything) HRF would want in exchange for a helmet... maybe just carrying the company name on the helmet would be enough, especially if the helmet was purchased with community points donated by players. They can prolly get the helmet cheaper too? And don't limit talks to a helmet.
I should add... in my experience sponsorship is very difficult to get... so don't give up on the other ideas earlier in this thread.
There's a lot of IF's and BUT's and I would expect to run into a lot of resistance - remember, you're asking for peoples money.... but you are on a site where people are paying real money to stable virtual horses each month... so the people here must have money to spare!
If all else fails find yourself an extravert friend with too much energy and lots of flare - they usually have lots of ideas... and they're useful to have around for your public relations once you hit the big time!
2 weeks 7 hours
dragonfeather - Yes I know where you're coming from. But as long as the helmet doesn't get broken, I will still be able to use it when I start riding racehorses - which if all goes as planned, will be in about 3 years. Actually, my jockey friend may be getting a retired Thoroughbred depeding on some things, and if so, I'll need the helmet for that next summer. There are a couple other reasons and some things I need to practice, but can't without a helmet. I have thought about it a lot, definitely not a decision I'd just make on the spur of the moment... I know what you mean though. :)
ronster - Thank you so much! Actually, you've helped more than you think... I've got a couple ideas with what you suggested but that's all I'll say for now. We'll see where this takes me. Thank you again. :)

Kayla take notes from any of the experienced members here. They will help for sure and are all great friends to.
As for being a jockey stay here in the game. it is so realistic you will be surprised what you will learning riding with different statistics.
As for making cash i am the last person to help ya with that 1... so stick with JACK.
Give me a BUZZ when you need help drinking, smoking, getting lots of creditcard debts and a massive tax bill... im good at that stuff.
LMAO LMAO..
Welcome to the community, by the time your 40 you will be crazy like me...
Best of luck with your quest for a jockey, pateince and the willingness to learn will get you there. The amount of money you needwill be easier to get then you think, dont stress.
Wash cars for your neighbours, do things for family to help out for a few bucks like cleaning house and stuff. every $1 puts you a step closer to your dream.
good luck with it all.

Kayla i forgot to mention my Daughter is only 17 now.when she was your age she needed cash to just to do things she wanted. ( like you)
The difference between a strong willing person and a lazy person is simpe.. Lazy poeple just ask mummy for the cash.
Poeple like you and my daughter want to earn it themselves which makes you a great person with great future to.
Back to my girl, because legally you need to be 16 in australia to work my daughter worked at my (ex-wifes) freinds hair salon.. All hair salons need young kids to keep the floor clean and they pay cash to. At 16 she got a job at hungry jacks. ( same as MACDONALDS) now that is good work and good pay for a girl your age. They always want younger work because they need to pay older workers to much.
Everything the other members here say is perfect info for you so read and learn and i know you will succeed..
Wish my spelling was as good as yours lol lol..
Stay head strong and make your own future girl... To many younger kids get traped into the (follow my best freind)attitude which is bad.
You will get there in the end.
Take care
Dave

Yeah I don't like asking for money from people, I never have and never will. Besides, if you get something by working for it and earning it, it's so much more rewarding. I'll be 15 in a couple weeks so in about exactly a year I'll be 16, and maybe be able to get a job at a place like McDonalds or something at that point... ha, imagine that, a soon-to-be jockey working at a fast food place! That's kind of funny to think about. lol But yes, you gave me some good ideas and I'm sure I could find work somewhere else even now.
Thank you so much!

Well, I ended up getting a helmet & helmet cover for Christmas... it wasn't the $200 one but that doesn't matter... the point is I have one! I also got a pair of jockey pants among other things. So now I'm putting my money toward a riding vest and jockey boots.
Thank you all for your help! More ideas still welcome. :)

See if you can find a friend locally that knows someone that can sew. My wife used to like to sew and one of the first things I bought her was a sewing machine. She made clothes for our daughters out of purchased material and also customized and improved purchased clothing. She would make window coverings and trimmings, table cloths and other items. The point I am getting at is that if you can find such a person you can buy the material and patterns and have them make you custom jockey uniforms, shirts, pants, jackets, etcetra. Not a way to earn money, but a way to save some and have custom made items at the same time.

slavedave - haha no worries! Truthfully I really don't even like McDonalds. Yeah Chantal is awesome for sure...
outbackjack - LOL I was so suprised that I got it as a present, you should have seen my face. But now I'm putting the money I was going to use on the helmet, toward a riding vest which is also a couple hundred dollars. You can bet I'm goin' places, I'm going to get that vest and boots if it's the last thing I do. :)
richardmacias - Oh that's a great idea! My grandma is actually really good at sewing... she tried to teach me but I don't have enough patience. :) lol Anyway, although she's not crazy about me becoming a jockey, I'm sure she'd help me out with that sort of thing. Thanks for the idea!!
motron - Gee thanks, that helps! Afraid I don't have any more teeth to lose... 5 or 6 years too late for that. And I don't want to lose any of the teeth I have know, because then I won't be able to smile pretty for the cameras in the winner's circle (which is, of course, where I'll be most of the time) ;)

Just reading your posts again i need to ask.. did your parents get you the helmet gift
i ask because reading between the lines in your first post it is possible they already had it bought, thats why they would not let you spend your money on it.. my mum was the same so i start nagging and nagging every time i needed somthing and xmas or birthday was close.
just a little trick to get what you want but continue your quest to make your own money also.
Reading other forums here i think there maybe a jockey possition available soon. LOL LOL LOL

My grandma actually got me the helmet, but my parents obviously knew she was getting it. So yes, you're right, that's one of the reasons why they didn't want me using my money!
