just had a good horse in sprint final beaten 100L, because idiot jockey went to the whip right out of the gate after i instructed to slow horse early. this horse went 8 wide around turn losing horribly. this horse was second favorite and jockey killed her. what is the point of giving instructions if they do the oppisite? i thought this new way to instruct might work but apperently not. the 2 horses that were first and second were eighth and ninth early in race passing all the tiring speed. i knew my horse breaking from post 9 would go wide if tried for the lead, so told rider to drop back off the pace and hopefully go inside since 7 horses tried for the lead. yeah right. i guess the jockey doesnt understand english so i will have to learn other languages to speak. i am very annoyed right now-- this horse had great chance to win this tourney until the gate opened. abolish instructions if they are going to be ignored!!

Yeah, I was absolutely shocked to see a horse with those light blue and white silks fade at the top of the lane so badly but after going eight wide even the great Quadrangle (bow to his awesomeness) would show signs of wear.
I still don't completely believe that Open Fire would have won the Fast Event Final, but would've had a much better chance.

As far as tweaking this part of the game, seems as though we're not quite there yet. Maybe they're still working on a solution that will satisfy us.
When I creat my own races in private mode, I like the menu options that says, Go to the lead. Stalk, mid pack and far back early, etc, or words to that affect. Several options.
As it is now, say you have a horse that likes to be in front and you tell the jockey to let the horse run to his style (that would be on the lead) and he runs 10th or 11 th most of trip. That leads to discouragement.
So, now you have a problem in his/her next race. Do you say to the rider, let the horse run to his/her style, ( will you get the same negative results? ) ,or do you say, have him/her run faster than usual.
Not sure why you'd say that to the jockey, when you're horse is always out in front. So now, I really don't know what the best advice would be.
1 year 49 weeks
Just stabing in the dark here.
Say there are 10 horses in a race.
All 10 trainers think there "front runners"
Jockey instructions:go for the lead.
The slower horses will become mid's and back runners.
Otherwise they would be 12 wide comming around the last turn.
Some horses r faster than others, some slower.
Why did my 96 base SR horse just beat Modgraphix horse "Arabian Night".My horse ran a 116 SR?(sorry Mod)
That's why this game is so realistic.
You can have all the information in the world and think you got it figured out.
Then here comes "Mind That Bird" 50:1 Longshot and blows the field away.(in the Kentucky Derby no less)
A good trainer will have good percentages, but you never know

I am only just starting to apply jockey instructions , When I start tournaments I don’t give any jockey instructions what so ever , if the horse runs well I keep to the same , I am now starting to use instructions more , I have 2 to apply instructions to today and these run on the 25th . If I have any good results from these 2 races, I will post the info.
Its early days with these new instructions but if anyone is getting positive results, please post, even if it’s just a quick comment.
Thanks

I see is if you have a horse that runs differently then the game says what do you do?
I have a horse that says it likes the lead but he always comes from far back so do i
let him run according to his traits? what are his traits? how he runs or what the game says?
yes,confussing LOL

I feel your pain.
My horse was in that race "Shining Bright' and she had severe traffic problems if you watch the race. I think she would've won if not for the traffic problems. The last two races she's been in she finished 3rd and 4th because of traffic problems.
1st place was a crap load of points compared to the 67,000 I got for third place.

The horse i'm talking about is "Craig3" he finishes fine i'm just at a loss what to do with him.
I've been holding him back early in the current tournament and hes finished 2nd in all 3 races.
Think i'll just let him go this time and race how he wants :) and yes it does keep us on our toes.

I'm also baffled by horses which run one way in practice races, then have a completely different running style in tournaments. I'm aware of different break speed, pace and post position scenarios and how they effect the outcome of a race. That's not an issue for me. It's the fact that trainers like me are kind of winging it now as far as ascertaining the true running style and basing the jockey instructions on that style. The Performance Report says one thing, practice says another quite different thing. As far as I'm concerned you can toss your jockey instructions in the circular file until there's some tweaking done. When the game gets upgraded, I believe these issues are going to be addressed, so that a horse will show the same characteristics in practice that it does in a tournament. That will make training races a much more accurate way to determine ability and style and surface preferences, as well as consistency of performance for each individual horse. I'm looking forward to that, and I really like the fact that the HRF team is constantly doing their best to make the game more fun for us. Until then, I'll fly by the seat of my pants and still have fun playing.

What I have found with my horses is that you really have to see how your horse breaks, and what the pace is.
Imperial Zen--says she likes to be midpack, but most of the time she is second last or last. If the pace is really slow she'll be closer, and I've even seen her take the lead in practice races.
Imperial Song-says she likes the lead, but she breaks so darn slow she's always at the back of the pack. She's a special bred so she's done crappy in tournaments thus far, but in practice her second quarter is always at least at the same speed as her first, and this is when she passes the other horses and gets the lead.
Imperial Star-she likes the lead, but she also is silly and won't slow down if the PC runs her. So in her first tournament race I had her run slower than usual, and it did slow her down once she made the lead. I was happy with that, and she managed to get a third.
I think it's definitely important on how your horse actually breaks from the gate. The other thing I try with Imperial Zen is to have her go wide, rather than get stopped in traffic. Of course I'm sure it will cost me a race because she'll be tired, but if she's gearing up and gets stopped by tiring horses that will be worse. Imperial Star because she's so fast out of the gate I'll have her always save ground. Thus far this has worked.

Com'on, it Mine that Bird.
If the "computer" misreads your horse's ability out of the gate or early in the race which has already been confirmed with some horses, the new instructions are then more confusing. I am trying to race my best "Purple Screen Horse" who is a "stalker". In the same tournament, it ran crazy out of the gate (too fast) with old instructions as a stalker, now it stalks (with new instructions) on keep it's same style instructions. So with one race left and then hopefully the finals, I have no idea what to use. Well it is too late because the instructions are already in for the last race but assuming it makes the finals, I have no clue. Why would we change the instructions before we could use them in private mode??????????????
Question 1 again, if the computer is misreading our horse do we use instructions to compliment the way it was running in tournaments or do we guess that the new instructions know the "real" horse now?

I know exactly what you mean...i have a horse that suppose to lead but he always comes from behind.
So do i run him according to his traits? and what traits do i go by? what it says his traits are or how he really runs?
All preliminary races i told him to slow down early...what do they really mean, how he runs or what it says in the game.
So now for the final i have no idea...I just got the last instructions right and now they change them on me...lol

Anyone who races horses, either fantasy or real, deal with the same frustrations. Once that gate opens, anything can happen. As it pertains to the game, I think it all boils down to the horse. Jockey instructions as you know only have an impact of 2%. In a closely contested contest, that could make a difference, but post position and trip probably have more impact on the race.
I've posted this before and I'll post it again for those that didn't see it. Your horse is made of many attributes. The depth of the animal in your barn is amazing. Anyone of those attributes or a combination of attributes could spell demise in any particular race. There is one called ratability. Ratability is your horses ability to rate. If its low, I do not care what instructions you give, your horse is going to go as fast as he can as long as he can. Any combination of attributes or lack there of could be the reason for a bad race. The attached screen shots came from the old DOS version, that allowed users to build your own horses. I count at least 18 attributes that can effect your horse.
To simply say, the jockey didn't listen minimizes the true depth of your race horse.
Here is a few question, when it says your horse likes the lead, is it saying your horse likes the lead in the race they are in or it likes the lead at their preferred distance?
Once you've narrowed the first question down, does your horse rate well? does it like traffic? does it handle the turns? how is the courage? Is it time for an off race due to consistency, durability or soundness? Did your horse weight stress point effect him in the final?
Very complex game. I think the issue for HRF is how far do they go before its to complex for the majority of the end users.
What I would like to see at some point is the base attributes of the breeding horses displayed, so we could try to breed towards particular attributes that we think are important. Whether its dirt or turf; courage or soundness, etc. I think it would be cool to know that you are shooting for something other than a 120 SR.

I will write this again if you didn't read it the first time. The ^%$*)(* horse is running in a different manner in the same tournament with the same instructions I think. He is a "stalker, when put on stalk he ran full out until he was done, now letting him run as he is "programed" he cant make the lead. The instructions were changed mid tournament and, 3 races with the old instructions and 2 of the new! I understood that it went out too fast and I could change that, I have no idea how the horse races now, get it?
Like is tough.........................

I agree with your statement ronwar. Its a complex game with no guarantees of the outcome once the gate opens. That may add some virtual reality to the experience.
After all my reading, I've learned that even though you shoot for the next great champion, you may still get a bum of a race horse. I chose my sire & dam with a lot of things in mind besides a great SR. And a lot of them won't be evident (if so) until he is in competition. Of course a poor performance is still a possibility, but you train & hope for the best of any of the attributes, if not for all of them! But if gameplay offers an option of jockey instructions-again for the feel of reality-its safe to say you should be able to count on some of the instructions to be important enough to follow...its worth 2% of how the horse performs. Minimal, yes. But still part of the whole. Just as frustration & disappointment will be just part of this whole experience.
3 hours 39 min
007, I get what both you and Qwerty are saying. The fact that you give instructions, you want them to be carried out. Me too :) I only say that perhaps the other 98% of factors over rides the 2%, I don't know.
Maybe they should do away with jockey instructions to eliminate the frustration so many have. I think everyone, myself included have been trying to apply a cookie cutter approach to training. Trying to find the one or two things that we can do and unlock the secrets to success, then just repeat. I have found it to be much deeper than that. Just because my horse runs well after I administer a certain jockey instructions and runs well, I can't count on him running well because I administered the same instructions. I'm not even sure that's the reason he ran well or didn't run well.

May they all come home safely!!!

By george, I think you've you've got it! LOL The majority of factors (98%) that a horse has to win a race may just override the 2% that we get a say so on. I feel you on that. LOL Sounds very logical to me...
1 hour 8 min
Taking everything into consideration, it seems like you ( any of us ) won't be too far off base, if you don't give the rider instructions. I mean, as far as where you want to place your horse. Lead, stalk, mid pack, come from far back.
However, this may have a negative affect on the saving ground along rail, or staying clear of traffic, going to the outside, etc. I guess you have to give instructions, consdiering that.
At this point, I'm not sure what to do. Think I'll leave it up to the horse and not the jockey. As far as the workout patterns, I suppose it would be wise to keep a record for each horse to see what pattern is best. I know in marathon races, I prefer long, slow ,gallops for my horses.

Testing is the issue. Before the change, the instructions were not perfect but ast least they were consistent with testing. Now your "practice races" have almost no value in my opinion. We have one set of protocol for races and one set for the private mode. These are not real horses, so there will always be a "gamer" side to this hobby. For example, Aqua wants to go out to fast in her previous races, but if I told her to close and get in some traffic, she had a nice closing kick. The instructions in practice mode allowed me to discover this. Now she races in a "perfect" condition tournament for her later this week and I have no idea if her natural style will have her stalking or in the lead burning up all her energy.
Why change the instructions mid-stream? Please answer my 6th request for the same question!

LMAO, clear and to the point!!! LOL
i see many are as confused about the jocke instr. as i am, i was getting the hang of it and poof....what's this something new? oh my, i am in the middle of tourney and now have different instructions to choose ..hmmm let's see........
in the real world the trainer and jockey talk alot more about the horse traits, how the horse likes to run where the horse likes to run and when to make the move....we don't have these type of instructions so, i guess we need to figure out what we can do with what we got for now. And to tell you the truth, i am at a loss currently...LOL
consider this, you have a jockey that has rode your horse several times then you cannot get htat jockey for your horse, so you hire a new jockey, well, as a trainer i would be a fool to simply state to the new jockey ...go faster, or go slower...and figure it out while you out on the track in the middle of the race with the horse, i would not be a good trainer if i did that, i would instruct the new jockey as to where my horse likes to be at the beginning , middle and when to move for the win at the end..rail , outside....how wide can horse go and still be going...the horse is stalker midpack, closer , tactical speed etc..etc...etc.... jockeys don;t make alot of money by not winning....so they need to know. just my pinion, nothing more.
with that said, i am sure they are doing all they can to fix the little gremlins....but it takes time, and i appreciate that.
Good Luck all, and BTW Cratzphil, what did you end up using for your instructions...your horses are doing great.

I know the new updates are coming...with alot of goodies...smiles
But my personal views on the subject!
(1) I believe we should be allowed to give full instructions for our runners before they go into tournaments for example lead, stalk, when to make there run 100-600 metres, set the pace and so forth.
(2) Then HRF only need to focus on whether the horse can run on track, conditions, distance, consistency and courage.
Only a suggestion that might help improve the game...

Where have you been? Oh that's right Owls only come out at night.
Ok,OK....Here's how you do the instructions...
First,(i'm sorry i'm laughing already)First, you have to make sure what kind of horse you have.
If your horse is on the lead but not necessarily a front runner, you might want to hold him back a little(but not too much)
If he is a "stalker" well that's a whole new ball game.
Stalkers always fade early but can stay on the lead when necissary. If he is mid pack or flex that's when it get's tricky. The flex horses like to ride up front,or in the back sometimes in the middle.Mid horses are the complete opposite! They like to ride in the middle or in the back and sometimes up front.Far back i'm too tired.
You guys know if you don't do anything, that works too.
You can only gain +2% or -2% with instructions.I'm guessing if you do nothing, you can't increase your chances or decrease your chances.

The main problem I can see with ranting at the jockeys is that they're all computer bytes, and nothing you can say will possibly insult them.
And in a race with 12 horses, only one jockey will fulfill the simplest of instructions: "Win this one."
I do actually have some favorite words for automated systems using binary language, sometimes I'll say, in my most menacing snarl, "011000111101010001101110001110011, 110001001!!!!"
I still never see a tear drop from my computer's smirking face.
