Though I have to say Borel deserves to ride Mine That Bird, I have to sympathize with his owners. And I'm glad they got their situation organized before it was to late.

So how do you feel? I think Mike Smith will do an incredible job! Really loved the confidence he had in that little gelding in the Preakness.

Borel is a money grubber. Mine that Bird got him the Derby win.
It was sort of unsavory when he stiffed him in the Preakness (would have loved to see Mine that Bird beat him in the stretch) but it made some sense because Rachel Alexandra was his regular ride.
But this is just distasteful. I hope he loses all summer on all the nags he rides.

Man, I was hoping the same thing actually. When I saw that gelding move, I was like "YEAH THATS IT KICK THEIR BUTTS..".
I'm very shockingly not a Rachel Alexandra Fan... hope nobody comes to hit me or something now.

Now come on i live in Louisville and go to churchill downs about once a week and i have to say Calvin is one of the best riders there next to Julien Lep. Another thing is Racheal is a beast i have no problem with him riding her he knew she was the best horse and was his regular ride. he did let mine that bird go to early in the belmont but give him another shot and he will know that track he was not familier with it not ever riding there. you have to think what you would do, i know if it was me i would of rode Racheal to she is the better horse. he has to take care of his family as do we so dont Knock someone for taking care of there own!!!!

The decision to remove Borel from Mine That Bird really has nothing to do with Rachel Alexandra. It was the result of Borel and his agent to ride Warrior's Reward in the Jim Dandy rather than Mine That Bird in the W.V. Derby. Can't blame the connections for their decision and when the new Jockey is selected there is no doubt that he will be equal to or better than Borel in their talent level. Borel is a good jockey but in my opinion he is not even in the top ten nationally.

Borel lost his shot as far as I am concerned when he chose the filly over the gelding. I realize he knows her better and that he has ridden her and made a commitment on her.
But personally, I'm rather happy he -will- not be riding Mine That Bird. He's allowed all the publicity to get into his head a bit to much. That is why he made the mistake he did in the Belmont Stakes. Whether he has ridden there or not, if he had any doubts -- which I don't care what anyone says -- he should've had SOME doubt not having been on there. He should've took a spin on MTB on that surface.
The "Big Sandy" is a challenge for a reason, his loss on Mine That Bird proves that reason. It's a deep surface which can wear a horse down, knowing the style of which he intended to run Mine That Bird -- he should've saved some ground at some point. Rather then making a move to soon. Though I do still think Summer Bird would've been at the finish probably -- Dunkirk would not of taken second. In my personal opinion.
I like Zenyatta over Rachel Alexandra personally, now that's a talented female. The horse clearly knows she's 'hot stuff', if you ever watch a video recorded by Larryzapeye on Youtube.com you'd see this mare strutting -- literally, strutting in post parade and after the race. She's no fool.

Not to mention I did read somewhere during the whole "Rachel" drama that if he did choose "The Bird" over her. Robby Albarado would've gotten the mount. To which I think Borel wouldn't have gotten her back. To me that's when you get some guts and stand up to people like that - but that's just me.
Now back on topic! I can not for the life of me understand why he committed to a horse when they knew very well Mine That Bird was going to make another start. If he had really wanted to keep him, I don't think he would've made nearly as many commitments. So, once again whoever it is -- really hope it's Smith -- I know they will do a very good job. The horse deserves better.
