I sometimes believe the track announcers are the most unheralded group in horse racing. I made a quick list of my favorites that I have heard.
John Dooley-Arlington
John Bothe-Indiana Downs
Trevor Denman
Phil Georgeff
John Scully-Fairmount
Luke Krystobusch-Churchill

Not a bad list, but you are forgetting one of the most entertaining (in my mind) announcers ever: Tom Durkin, from Saratoga. There's a reason he's asked to do the triple crown races. I agree, though, that announcers are a largely unnoticed, but essential part of horse racing.
Have a good rest of the day! o-O

Luke Krystobusch isn't the race caller at churchill downs anymore. mark johnson has that job now. which i don't know much about him except that he had been a race caller in europe. or thats what someone had said during the race broadcast that espn did before the ky derby for the races on the undercard.

My favorite caller is Trevor Denman. I love his and Mark Johnson's accents.
-The spirited horse, which will try to win the race of its own accord, will run even faster if encouraged.

i just wish that mark johnson had been able to call the ky oaks and the ky derby. since i would like to see how he would call the two races.

I have to say i really like Dave Johnson and Tom Durkin especially Durkin in the Breeders cup earlier Years

Mark Johnson did call the Oaks and Derby, it just didn't go out on T.V. I think there's at least one video of the Oaks on YouTube that has his call.
I'm fond of Larry Collmus of Monmouth Park and elsewhere.

Chic Anderson was another great one. He's a native of my home town Evansville, In. he got his start calling the races @ Ellis Park. Luke Kruytbosch also called the races @ Ellis Park. great announcer and so well liked there.

One of the all time greats.

Doug, maybe he was related to Lou Gehrig & Cal Ripkin Jr. 15,587 called races in a row. unbelievable. that's a race every day for over 42yrs.
Doug, with all the knowledge you have of the sport of horseracing, you should write a book about all of your experiences over the years.

Ya know, David, I've given this much thought and this could become a posibility. Yes, I do have a vast amount of knowledge and first hand experiences, going way back in time, not to mention the historical knowledge that I have of thorughbred horse racing throughout the world. I was thinking the other day, that most of the old timers that could tie in the past with today are mostly all gone now. That leaves the door open for me. I will give this more thought. Indeed, I will.

Joe Hernandez is a great call, he announced Santa Anita from opening day 1934 till he died in 1972 without missing a race! Ironically he fainted during the middle of a race in his final race call and died that evening after being kicked in the head by a horse earlier that morning at Hollywood Park.
As far as present day announcers its gotta be Trevor Denman, he can make a $10,000 claimer feel like a grade 1 race......

The "wife race call" was Hilarious!!!
Doug...write the book, you'll regret it if you don't give it a shot.
I like the Aussie accent at the US tracks I play on twinspires. Just something about it, I don't know.

I'll write the book. In a conversation with my wife at dinner time, she told me that I should. Ya know,I'm on twinspires now, as most know and notice so many good announcers. Oh, I notice the not so good announcers too.
I'd like to compliment the announcers from, England and Australia. They sure have good memories and are able to fully cover those large fields. I'd think that would be hard to do. I think, calling a quarter horse race would be hard to do too. JMO I don't think that fast. LOL
Larry Culmus has been mentioned a few times already. He is very good and well liked. Quite a few years ago, he was the track announcer at Golden Gate Fields, here in northern California. He's changed his style over the years, in my opinion. I liked the old style. I like the new style.
I agree about Trevor Denman (ex jockey) I think he's the best around today. Certainly hard to fault. Andrew Beyer once said, " Trevor Denman is the best announcer calling the races today ".
If you folks want to read a good book, get the one about, Joe Hernandez. It comes with a free DVD of some of his race calls. Most don't know this about Joe, but he was also into other phases of the game of horseracing, other than as a track announcer. The book will explain. Quite involved.
Oh, btw, I'm still putting together my version of a race call. Me as the track announcer. :) Coming soon.

Good decision to do so. Knowledge not passed down is such a loss for all. There would be no 'history' if not for writings of the past. Write all your memories down, then just take it from there. It'll all fall into place. History needs all the input as it can get to be relevant, so the past shall not forgotten.

Slavedave - we miss your great race announcing here at HRF.
