Racing Observations at Santa Anita

I made some observations on Sunday as some of the horses began prepping for the Breeders’ Cup races. In the Oak Tree Mile over the turf, Global Hunter just did not look comfortable. After the race, the jockey appeared to be very outspoken with the trainer and clearly had some issue. Global Hunter, who came off of a very strong performance, might be worth a second look if he makes it into the Breeders’ Cup event. Hyperbaric looked good winning the Oak Tree Mile and helped Garrett Gomez achieve his 3,000th career victory.

In the Norfolk, where the 2-year-olds got to strut their stuff, the highly-touted Regal Ransom did not fire at all. This is a horse coming out of a very big maiden race with a huge speed figure. I look for him to rebound in a big way, but don’t expect him on Breeders’ Cup day. On the other hand, the also highly-touted Azul Leon appeared totally unimpressive. He just might not like this surface. It will be interesting to see how he trains over the surface in preparation for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. This could be one of those situations where the horse that was coming from Del Mar training over Hollywood might have needed to start over this surface. Let’s watch how he trains. He may be a big price opportunity on Breeders’ Cup day. The winner of the Norfolk, Street Hero, looked absolutely spectacular. This 2-year-old came home powerfully down the stretch and appears to be getting better with each race. He had an impressive work over the track and took to the surface like a duck taking to water. It will be interesting to see how he does over his next few works.

Midshipman ran a solid race and is an absolute contender for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. After winning the Del Mar Futurity and actually defeating Street Hero twice, it appears to me that he will be well poised for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. But, with that said, I don’t expect this horse to get my money. There will be much more value with other horses.
