With spring coming soon, insiders have begun picking their favorites for this year's Kentucky Derby. We picked the brain of one track-side insider and hear that he likes Eskendereya, likening him to an all around super-horse. Despite his incredible pedigree, cruising prowess and ability to dominate the other horses, the insider worries that the Eskendereya might have a tendency to burn out early in the backstretch. There is also a lack of confidence in trainer Todd Pletcher and his past performance in training horses that peak early. Although on the positive side, Eskendereya will have six weeks off between the Florida Derby and the Kentucky Derby. We picked the brain of yet another track-side insider, and our chat revealed that Dublin is an unlikely emerging force for the Kentucky Derby. Having undergone recent throat surgery, Dublin has recovered and is once more showing signs of his former greatness with a very impressive run at Southwest Stakes. Word of mouth is that Dublin is expected to dominate the 3-year old ranks just like his dad once did. There's still a long way to go before Churchill Downs, but with his stamina, speed and power, Dublin is a horse that's again turning a lot of heads and winning a lot of respect. The only other horse getting better buzz in the back-rooms and club-houses is the horse that defeated Dublin at the Southwest Stakes: undefeated three-year old Conveyance. After winning $250,000 at the Southwest Stakes, laid back Conveyance has emerged as a true contender for glory at Churchill Downs. Word is that his trainer saw the Southwest Stakes as a test of Conveyance's ability on a fast dirt track. He was undoubtedly impressed with what he saw, as were we. Although there are still lingering concerns that Conveyance can sustain his overpowering speed for 10 furlongs. Still, insiders are impressed with Conveyance's showing at Southwest as well as San Rafael. The way he held off Dublin has proven to our insiders that Conveyance has much more than just speed--he has the heart of a champion.
