A day at the races with friends and family: expect fast paced fun and excitement!

If you haven't gotten the chance to go to your nearest racetrack to enjoy a day among the majestic thoroughbreds, then you are really missing out on a chance to have fun. Pick a day, most likely a Saturday, in which the weather is nice and sunny so that the weather won't be a problem. When you go, make sure to take your camera because fans are allowed to go to the paddock area and get within arms distance of the horses. The pictures I've seen fans post on our site after a day at Santa Anita Park, for instance, are wonderful in most cases. Horses have a rugged beauty to them, and their equal parts strength and delicacy are apparent to the lens of the camera. Sometimes trainers and owners will even allow you to take photographs of yourself with the horse.
Trainers and grooms and other horsemen are always around the track, so if you're up for a little adventure, it's usually not that difficult to find a trainer that will talk to you for awhile, and introduce you to the hidden world of horseracing, the world that exists before and after the races are run. You may even get a chance to see the stalls in which the horses live, maybe even feed one a peppermint or a carrot. And if you have children, I can tell you from experience that they are usually quite taken by the animals and their beauty.
Once the races start, you can make simple $2 wagers if you're on a tight budget and, if you're shrewd and get some sage advice from some veteran horseplayers, you can make quite a tidy little sum betting no more than $5. For a little more money, you can get into the more exotic bets like the quinella, the trifecta, and the superfecta. What's great about racing is that it's the only sport in which your betting money actually determines the final odds and payouts for a race, so needless to say most racing fans have vested interest in the race, and are very excited to be there. The excitement of a hotly contested stretch drive is the thing that keeps me coming back year after year, and I really love taking my friends and family to the track to enjoy a day at the races. I think you should take a chance and check it out, too.
