Holy Bull (click here to ride him in our game, NOW!) was naturally a frontrunner. However, he could stalk the pace willingly if the circumstances dictated. His trainer, William Croll, felt that Holy Bull was the best horse in the land in 1994, and declared before the 1994 Woodward that the Woodward would be his final race of that season, that he was skipping the Breeders' Cup because he didn't want to pay the significant entry fee to run him in the Breeders' Cup Classic. He also felt that Holy Bull's 1994 season was so impressive that his presence wasn't needed in the Breeders' Cup to confirm he was the best horse in the land. Indeed, Holy Bull before and after the Kentucky Derby was a sight to behold! He led wire-to-wire in the Florida Derby and the Blue Grass Stakes, had his hiccup in the Derby, but then came back strong to defeat older horses in the Metropolitan Mile, then rattled off three wins in a row against three-year-olds, winning the Dwyer, Haskell, and the Travers while leading at every single point-of-call except one!
It all came down to the Woodward for Holy Bull, where he would again face older horses. Trainer Croll knew that a dominating performance in the Woodward could cement the hard-to-fathom (at the time) prospect of winning Horse of the Year without even running in the Classic at year's end. The 1994 Woodward featured almost all 4 and 5-year-olds, including '93 Belmont winner Colonial Affair. Watch and listen to the jubilation and wonder in Tom Durkin and Dave Johnson's voices as they describe Holy Bull's performance, one that locked up Horse of the Year for this amazing thoroughbred!
