It still stands to this day!Dr. Fager in 1968 was simply incredible. He won an astounding 4 seperate Eclipse Awards in the same season: Champion Sprinter by way of his amazing repeat win in the 7-furlong Vosburgh Handicap in record time while carrying 139 pounds, Champion Turf Horse due to his win against the best turf horses in North America in the United Nations Handicap, Champion Handicap Horse because he never carried less than 130 pounds, and of course Horse of the Year because in 8 starts he lost only once, to the great Damascus.
Those accomplishments are great, to be sure, but the Doc's greatest accomplishment was certainly his world record in the Washington Park Handicap, run at Arlington Park on August 24, 1968. Dr. Fager was assigned high-weight of 134 pounds, spotting the rest of the field at least 14 pounds. When the great Doctor broke out of the gate and was challenged, he unleashed a truly frightening display of speed in order to collar the leader. His second quarter of this race was run in a jaw-dropping 20&3!!! That quarter-mile fraction is to this day believed to be the fastest quarter mile ever run within the body of any race in history! All that really needs to be said about this race is summed up by the great Chicago track announcer Phi Georgeff. After the race concluded, he forgot to turn off his microphone. Stunned by the absolute ease with which Dr. Fager had ran the race he just called, he very quietly said one word...."WoW!" Nothing more needs to be said; just watch this phenomenal horse at his very best:
