When you first look at the pictures of this young filly, the first thing that comes to your mind is fear. So, I want to tell you right away, the horse suffered very minor injuries but learned a very valuable lesson. Just like children, especially younger horses tend to be quite curious. And, curiosity, well, can lead to trouble. You know what they say, curiosity killed the cat. Well, in this case, curiosity almost killed the horse.

Who knows how long the horse was stuck in the tree, but patiently waited (what else could she do) until a neighbor discovered the situation and reacted in a calm but effective manner. The first thing you’ve got to wonder is, what was she trying to do? Was she trying to climb the tree? Maybe she was trying to walk through the tree. Maybe this young filly thought there was food inside the tree. Or, maybe her owner said, “By the time I come home from work, I’d really appreciate it if that tree was gone.” I guess it doesn’t matter how it happened, but it clearly did happen.
Animals never cease to amaze me. Horses, in particular, are always doing things that, to say the least, can be pretty shocking. My understanding is that this little filly has a great demeanor, but is a very curious animal. I can just imagine her spending weeks looking at that tree before deciding to take on the challenge, whatever the challenge was in her mind. A good neighbor who has a great love for horses and animals in general actually worked with a chain saw to slowly cut the bark away from the opening to begin freeing the horse. After a while, the patient horse (probably more likely totally fatigued and maybe even in shock) realized her head was free and was able to step out. Gracie, the filly, suffered a few cuts on her face and ear and dislocated her jaw. She’s healing up just fine, eating well but, from the last report, doesn’t go anywhere near that tree! I guess that’s a lesson all animals learn – if the stove is hot and you’ve learned it’s hot by touching it, it’s probably a good idea to avoid it after that. I think Gracie is going to stick with rolling in the grass and hanging out along the paddock fence where she feels a little safer and more at home.

WOW!
Oh my gosh! I couldn't believe it when I saw it. While it is slighty amusing, I feel rather bad for the poor thing! That had to be rather uncomfortable....
