On January 16 it was announced that rumors of the retirement of the great Zenyatta from horseracing were greatly exaggerated, and that she would be back on the track in the 2010 racing season. It would definitely be an option for this surefire Hall of Fame mare to compete for the $10 million up for grabs in the 2010 Dubai World Cup, the world's richest horserace. Zenyatta made history in 2009 by becoming the first female horse in history to win the Breeders' Cup Classic, thrilling the Santa Anita fans with an amazing come from behind win with Hall of Fame jockey Mike Smith aboard. Now with the news that she is returning to racing in 2010, the super mare could again try to make history by becoming the first female to ever win the Dubai World Cup. The Dubai World Cup is on a synthetic racing surface, so she will have to defeat a field of worldclass male horses once again, and do it on the surface she knows best. As we saw in the Breeders' Cup, we know that win or lose, Zenyatta will make her presence felt among the boys.
Thing is, that's not really what I am all that interested in. Oh sure, it would be exciting to see her mow down an international field of male horses, but what I want to see is for Zenyatta's braintrust to go after Rachel Alexandra. The trip across the Atlantic to compete in the Dubai World Cup takes a lot out of a horse physically and mentally, so if she were to run, the March running of that race will mean that Zenyatta probably wouldn't return to the track again until June or July. The question then would become: what kind of post-Dubai campaign would Zenyatta be pointed toward? Will she run mostly against other females until the Breeders' Cup, or will her exploits last year lead to a more ambitious campaign in 2010? One which features more races against males? It's highly unlikely, but wouldn't it be great to see Zenyatta race against Rachel Alexandra more than just once? Sure, if both are healthy, they should end up facing each in the Breeders' Cup, but don't those two have the potential to create the single greatest female horseracing rivalry in all of history if they were to face each other three or four times, Sunday Silence/Easy Goer style? Whatever the case, I will be eagerly awaiting the chance to see her run in 2010, that's for sure!

New Dubai Track
This years cup is on the "Plastics" not DIRT
Thanks for the update
I kind of had a hunch that there was something big going on behind the scenes having to do with big money that influenced the connections of, Zentatta to bring her back from retirement. Hard to turn a way from a $10,000,000 purse. I wouldn't be surprised if the Dubai people make an effort to keep her there. Personally, I would have prefered that she stay and race in America. This is where her fan base is.
Quite often when you go to race in these different countrys with the big purses you never come back home as the same horse. The traveling and everything elsee seems to take its toll. JMHO
'Artificial' Intelligence?

Shawn
I know they just built a new track in Dubai. I thought it was finished and has dirt and also thought that this is wherre the race would be held this year, 2010. At the new track.
Speaking of synthetic (plastic) surfaces, Santa Anita is getting ready to install a new synthetic surface for the third time. Mucho problems with heavy winter rains each year during ther meetings.
There's lots of meetings (different kind of meetings (LOL) ) going on now, considering getting permission to go back to real dirt. I like that idea and hope that's the way they'll go.
Synthetic all-weather course
http://business.maktoob.com/20090000426882/Dubai_richest_horse_race_trac...
The paper said that since the Dubai World Cup began in 1995 it has been run on a dirt track but the new chic venue offers a synthetic all-weather course that will attract turf-trained horses.
The feeling is with a 10 million dollar purse and the synthetic it will attract the Best Turf Euros.......
Gio Ponti is on target for the Cup
Oh, I see
I had it backwards. I'm wondering why, in our game, they have sand? Probably some expense and logistics getting real dirt to Dubai, I suppose.
Chosing to install synthetic surface to attract grass specialists, makes me wonder if they have a problem maintaining grass courses there, in that region of the world???
Hey Shawn
Where have you been lately?
Havn't seen much of you in the forums
Hope all is well with you and yours

Correction on the Dubai surface
When I originally posted this entry, I erroneously wrote that the racing surface that Zenyatta would have to run on was dirt. In fact, the Dubai course will feature a synthetic racing surface. A correction has been made in the story, and I apologize for the initial error and the confusion it most surely caused. Thank you so much for your understanding.
Very well played
I like the confirmation correction
Your a good sport old chap,I guess you do Rock

the new meydan racecourse
the new meydan racecourse opened on january 28th and it's very impressive it has two walking rings one is a large airy private saddling walking area that's off limits to the press unless they stand on a ledge overlooking it but their far enough away that the horses don't notice the cameras and people. it is every thing that the officials was claiming it was as being. but the surface there is the tapeta polyblend surface the same that presque isle downs has installed. and as far as i know that santa anita is going back to the dirt track not a new polytrack. since the board of racing in california had stated that if santa anita wants to return to a natural dirt surface that they will waive the rule of all tracks having the polytracks installed i guess that the polyblend at santa anita for some reason can't handle the extreme weather by santa anita park since it's close to the area that's always striken by wildfires each yr.
CHRB
These folks never mandated synthetic surfaces for any of the 2 week county fair meetings. This would probably be close to a dozen different tracks. They still have dirt.
Soooooooooooo the dumb madate only affected Santa Anita, Hollwood park, Del Mar and Golden Gate Fields. Bay Meadows, in northern California, got out of it because they were about to be closed and demolished. This has already taken place. Hollywood Park's future appears to be coming to an end soon. And even Golden Gate Fields might be in trouble. The bankrupt company that owns G.G. F. has put the track up for auction on 25 Feb. 2010 in New York, or Delaware. Del Mar is satisfied with their synthetic surface and plans no change back to dirt. By the end of Feb. 2010, Santa Anita will decide between a third synthetic surface or going back to real dirt. If they decide on dirt, then the California Horse Racing Board will have to give them permisson.
given all the trouble that
given all the trouble that santa anita has had which it had lead to them shutting the track down last yr in the middle of the meet to correct the issues which i'm sure had a lot of trainers and owners wanting to pull their hair out especially ones that was based in california and aiming their horses towards the tc. forgive me i know it was in 2008 i think but i'm still in the thing of saying last yr and meaning two yrs ago. but the next racenight at meydan which would be morning to mid afternoon in america is on the 5th and you can catch the races on TVG who has the rights to air it live in america which i think is downright awesome that instead of waiting till the DWC night people can view the races there leading up to the races on the undercard and the DWC as well
well Zenyatta was not
well Zenyatta was not nominated for the race. So barring something major the issue is done
but i know that we do have a
but i know that we do have a 75 to 85 chance that zenyatta will face off against rachel come time for the apple blossom since rachel's first race back at 4 is in about 6 weeks.
