How can you blame them? One of the eye-popping things I learned when reading about Curlin this year is that, even though he became the leading money winner in the entire history of racing this year, for his connections to race him in 2008, his insurance alone cost 60% of his winnings! That was astounding to me and, after reading that, I understood full-well why his owners would make the decision to retire him. Sure, it would have been nice to see come him back in 2009 to engage in a possible season-long battle of the sexes with Zenyatta, culminating in a showdown in the 2009 Breeders' Cup Classic. That would have been great for the sport, but if you're one of Curlin's owners, how in the world would you be able to live with yourself if you brought Curlin back and he hurt himself? Sure, the primary factor is the lucrative fees he will command as a stallion, of that there can be no doubt, but from a different point of view, if he were to get hurt before making it to the breeding shed the thoroughbred breed itself would lose out for generations. So, I get it. It makes me sad, but I get it.
With that, I just wanted to share with you Curlin's win in the 2008 Dubai World Cup, the world's richest race. He really showed the world in this race that, on dirt in 2008, he had no equal at all:

One more race
I read the other day that the Jackson's are considering racing Curlin one more time this year, 2008, then retiring him to stud duty, 2009. They're trying to find a race for him. Has this info changed???
