As the Triple Crown series concludes for 2009 with the running of the Belmont Stakes, horse racing fans invariably take a step back and examine how the potential year-end Eclipse Award contenders are stacking up. The Triple Crown races often play a big role in determining who will be the eventual Horse of the Year, and many people close to the sport are wondering how likely it is that the Belmont Stakes winner will go on to capture Horse of the Year honors.
A lot can happen between now and the end of the year, but at this moment, the only horse who is running in the Belmont Stakes who could be mentioned for Horse of the Year is Mine That Bird. If he was to win the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, sandwiched around a good second place finish in the Preakness Stakes, he would be right at or near the top of the Horse of the Year standings. Any of the others would have to string together an amazing run between now and the conclusion of the Breeders' Cup races to receive any Horse of the Year consideration.
It is still relatively early in the year and we have the big summer races and the Breeder's Cup ahead of us, so a lot can change, and we will just have to wait and see who emerges as the top racehorse of 2009.
