Of all the ways to lose my voice, three stands out. Singing in open-air when its cold, eating lots of cheese and enjoying an awesome moment in sports. Thanks to ZENYATTA, I'm officially hoarse and just recovered from coughing up a storm. Overcoming unbelievable odds, including those placed on the board, she dug deep, pulled through and even had time to "ham it up" before crossing the finish line. What a superstar and you gotta love her dance moves in the paddock and post parade.
I'll admit, I had my doubts which Jerry Bailey confirmed during the lead up to the race that for ZENYATTA to win, she would have to make inside moves turning for home instead of being wide like she usually would be against the females. My guess was she'd be trying to catch COLONEL JOHN and also SUMMER BIRD (the other bird) and one of the Europeans except RIP VAN WINKLE. Too many questions about his health in spite of his reputation. I like MINE THAT BIRD but I gave him no shot in this race. He looks horrible on synthetic, his last four races were abysmal thanks to over prepping and horrible rides and he's a late closer like ZENYATTA so if she had a step on him its over.
When QUALITY ROAD was scratched I became concerned about the pace of the race and how far ZENYATTA would have to be, knowing the pace might not be to her liking. To make matters worse, she started on the wrong lead and had to be corrected quickly by Smith whom I must say rode a veteran's race. As the race progressed she was still out of camera shot and the constant acknowledgement of track announcer Trever Denman made it even more apparent that she had work to do.
Turning for home I saw Mike do what I thought he'd do, keep her on the inside. Then the shouting started. I thought she would have had to be checked behind SUMMER BIRD and TWICE OVER but somehow Mike kept her momentum and switched her to the outside. From then on all i could hear were my screams of "Get them superstar!!!! GET THEM SUPERSTAR!!!!" I cheered. I cried. What a performance and she looked like she had more in the tank the way her ears pricked up. She's the champion and she knew it and LOVED IT!!!
Awesome Performance and definitely deserving of Horse of the Year honors. Not to take anything away from RACHEL ALEXANDRA (my middle name is Alexander btw....no relevance to the post whatsoever lol) but ZENYATTA made her point clear today.
She is indeed a Superstar.
