Horse Racing Fantasy – Big Brown VS. Smarty Jones

Trash talk is common place in all sports as athletes try to gain a mental edge on the competition with head games and brazen displays of confidence. Rarely does talking smack find its way to The Sport of Kings but Rick Dutrow did just that when he called out the connections of Smarty Jones and blamed their handling of the Philadelphia hero for his defeat in 2004’s Belmont Stakes. John Servis responded with pure class and dismissed the comments as a man nervous about his horse’s quarter crack and the issue quickly died down. I asked Smarty Jones for comment but he was too busy servicing mares at Three Chimneys Farm for a reported 100,000 per live foal and on a side note I am eagerly anticipating watching his 2 yr olds burst onto the scene this year.

All of this talk leading up to Big Brown’s potentially historic Belmont Stakes run begs the question. Who was better Smarty Jones or Big Brown? Both entered the Belmont as undefeated horses, we know Smarty was derailed by Birdstone in his quest for Triple Crown immortality. If Big Brown can pull it off he would become the first undefeated horse to win the Triple Crown since Seattle Slew in 1977. But to really answer the question we would need to match them up against each other and answer the question once and for all.

Horse Racing Fantasy gives inquiring horse fans the tools they need to answer this question in a simulated Triple Crown environment. Using Smarty Jones’ who can be acquired in the Best 3-year-olds & Up, Colts & Geldings 2004 horse file along with Big Brown from the recently released Best 3-Up Males of 2008 horse file these talented horses can do battle on the track in ways not previously possible. Should they been run against Smarty’s crop from 2004 or Big Brown’s crop of 2008, you get to make the call. Many pundits have said that the 2008 3 year old crop facing Big Brown is the worst in the last 20 years. By setting up simulated races for these two giants you can test that statement and more importantly find out who wins in a Simulated Triple Crown. I planned on interviewing Dutrow for this article to get his take on a simulated winner but decided to pass as I can easily guess who his money is on.

Good luck to Big Brown on June 7th
